John Sebastian and Lovin’ Spoonful
Hot town, “Summer in the City”! It was a now-classic hit for John Sebastian and Lovin’ Spoonful, who challenged the domination of the British Invasion in the mid-1960s. Even I, a young Brit new to New York, sang along with the 1966 hot-weather anthem.
Today, their hits from 1965 to 1967 are still on the play lists of our pool lounge DJs, proving that we still “believe in magic.”
This weekend marks the start of our 2013 pool season: dayclubs, ultra pools, topless revelry, parties and tanning from sunup to sundown and beyond. It kicked off with Thursday’s openings of Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria and Bare Pool Lounge at The Mirage.
It continues today with Tao Beach at The Venetian, a spring preview at Encore Beach Club, the opening of The Hard Rock Hotel’s Nirvana pool, Breathe Lounge and Paradise Beach with more than 50 Tahitian-styled cabanas and Destination Spring Break at Palms.
On Saturday, it’s the soft opening of the gorgeous Azure pool at Palazzo, and Scooter & Lavelle kick off Season 4 at Liquid. On Sunday, Marquee Dayclub at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas opens for St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
And coming soon:
* Wet Republic at MGM Grand returns with the It Pool Party on March 22 showcasing the first phase of a two-year remodel that included expanding the bar to 95 feet.

Away from the hard bodies at the pools, the second year of Celine Dion’s three-year contract at Caesars ends Saturday night, and she’ll take time out onstage for a special 10th anniversary salute to The Colosseum. We’ve posted her tribute to the building where she began her first run in 2003, plus, the $250 million bet few believed would pay off with her show and the theater.
Fellow Canadian songbird Shania Twain returns this weekend to resume her residency Tuesday. Celine returns to start the third year of her contract from June 4 to Sept. 1.
With Shania arriving and Celine departing, it’s a wow weekend of women: Alicia Keys, the 14-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, will “Set the World on Fire” with her tour stop at Mandalay Bay Events Center tonight, and comedienne Kathy Griffin uses her sharp knife to slash up Hollywood from The Mirage stage.
College basketball championships play out at three locations in town, and for fans who want music after the matchups, there’s Maroon 5, Flogging Molly, The Temptations and Ricci Martin in a weekend when everybody sings “Erin Go Bragh ( Ireland Forever)” to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
