Immigration Reform Event
Sen. Harry Reid will host an immigration reform event in Las Vegas on Monday, as the majority leader is hoping to hold a vote on the immigration reform bill currently under debate before a July 4 recess.
The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the offices of Culinary Union Local 226, 1630 S. Commerce St. In addition to Reid, D–Nev., Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D–Ill., will also be in attendance, along with other Nevada elected officials and advocates for immigration reform.
Gutierrez has been a vehement and vocal supporter for immigration reform, challenging President Barack Obama on his administration’s record-setting rate of deportations and coming forward as one of the first sponsors of Dream Act legislation.
The immigration bill now under discussion in the Senate, Senate Bill 744, was written by a bipartisan group of eight senators.
Earlier this week, a key border security amendment to the legislation passed with more than 60 votes. The vote was seen as a positive sign that the bill will eventually win approval in the Senate.
