The inaugural UFC on Fox Sports 1 card continues to fill up with significant bouts.
UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta told the Sun on Tuesday that a bantamweight bout between No. 2-ranked Urijah Faber (28-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and Yuri Alcantara (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) would be a part of the Aug. 17 event at the TD Garden in Boston. Later, the UFC announced Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (21-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC) would meet Chael Sonnen (27-13-1 MMA, 6-6 UFC) in the evening's main event.
Dana White previously promised the first UFC on Fox Sports 1 card would be the best free-television card the promotion has ever staged. The UFC president lived up to his words.
The card is loaded from top to bottom with nine fights currently announced. Fox Sports 1 plans to show six hours worth of fights in total on its first night.
Below Shogun vs. Sonnen, a bout between top-10 heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Travis Browne and a welterweight fight pitting Matt Brown and Thiago Alves project to snag prominent billing.
Faber fights for the third time this year after submitting Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen at UFC 157 and “The Ultimate Fighter 17" finale, respectively. Alcantara receives the step-up in competition he felt he deserved after knocking out Iliarde Santos in the first round at UFC on FX 8 three weeks ago.
