Public Safety:

Fire at vacant home, often used by homeless, under investigation

Fire on St. Louis Avenue

Firefighters finished battling a fire that caused around $150,000 in damages to a vacant house on Monday.

Fire crews responded to a call of a one-story concrete building ablaze around noon Monday in the 1600 block of St. Louis Avenue, near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

It took firefighters around 40 minutes to quell the blaze, mainly due to fears that the roof of the building would collapse, Szymanski said. No injuries were reported, and the building will most likely not be repaired, he said.

The home appeared to have been vacant for quite some time, with most of the windows boarded up and the last record of gas service coming in 1998, Szymanski said. Neighbors told fire officials said many homeless used the home as a residence.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Szymanski said.
