Stranded window washer

Firefighters rescued a window washer who was stranded on the side of a downtown Las Vegas building for more than an hour Monday morning.

The mechanism controlling a window washing platform broke, leaving the man trapped about 10:35 a.m. between the seventh and eighth floors of the building in the 300 block of Lewis Avenue, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

A rescue crew rappelled down the building and helped the man to the ground about 11:50 a.m., Szymanski said. Initial attempts to reach the man with a fire engine ladder fell short by a few feet, he said.

The man signalled for help by tapping on the window of the building to alert office workers to call 911, Szymanski said. He was uninjured.
