To be an American: Founded on freedom and respect

Last week we asked you what it means to be an American. We received a great response. Here are some of the letters and comments. We’ll publish more in the coming days.

Being American means being able to exercise my freedom of speech and religion without being judged.

It means showing respect for others, following the laws that our forefathers established and having moral standards to follow.

To me, it means I have the freedom to choose what I want to do with my life, to go wherever I want, to eat whatever I want, but still follow rules. I am proud to be an American. America today is going downhill with the bullying, profanity, lack of respect and morality. Where do we draw the line? I want my America back.

  1. Being American means defending and supporting the rights and equality of the least among us, even those too weak and poor to do so for themselves.

  2. Being American means you defend the rights all people; not just the ones you like or agree with.

  3. What a joke. Leftists telling us "you defend the rights of all people." Sure, if you agree with their brazen ploy to brainwash everyone into their "politically correct" agenda. Garcia thinks he can say what he wants without being judged. Again, a joke. Only the Commie-lites can do that and get away with the most awful things. The Alec Baldwins, Bill Mahers, Al Sharptons, etc. can be anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, homophobic or use crude profanities and you'll hear a not a peep of condemnation from the left. But when a Conservative voices an opinion that does not square with the left's whacko agenda, the mud slinging and name calling becomes intense. So, Garcia, take off the rose colored glasses and see what the United States of America has become in the past 50 years because of the Commie-lites and their thirst for the power to negate the rights the Constitution once afforded all U.S. citizens; not just the crazies on the left!
