Elderly man dies, woman injured in garage fire

Updated Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 | 7:30 p.m.

A man died and a woman was injured after a fire ripped through a garage at a southern valley home on Monday, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Firefighters responded at about 12:30 p.m. to a fire at a single-family home on the 700 block of Abbyville Drive, near Warm Springs and Paradise roads just south of McCarran International Airport and the 215 Beltway.

The fire was extinguished and contained within the garage, said Capt. John Steinbeck. Firefighters entered the garage through the house, and also by cutting away the roll-up garage door.

An elderly man and woman escaped the fire, but required medical treatment, Steinbeck said. One person was in critical condition, the other in stable condition; however, the nature of their injuries was unclear.

Both were transported to St. Rose Dominican Hospitals' Siena campus, where the man was later pronounced dead. The cause of his death, as well as his identification, will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office pending notification of his next of kin.

Nearly 30 Clark County firefighters responded to the fire, including four engine companies, one ladder truck, two rescue units, two chief officers and two fire investigators. Damages to the home are estimated at $40,000.
