Brooks drama escalates as lawmakers begin tackling governor’s budget

Updated Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 | 4:07 p.m.

The Nevada Legislature turned into bizarre drama on Wednesday, with Assemblyman Steven Brooks trying to sneak in and out of the building — wearing a hooded sweatshirt and hobbling with a cane — and apparently engaging the protection of the Las Vegas Constable’s office. The sideshow with Brooks, who is accused of threatening fellow Democrat Assembly Speaker-elect Marilyn Kirkpatrick, played out on the first floor of the Legislative Building while legislators upstairs began the serious work of reviewing Gov. Brian Sandoval’s $6.7 billion budget. Brooks was arrested this weekend on a charge of threatening a public official. Authorities said they ...

  1. Brooks does not represent what anyone should look for in a politician. He threatened someones life. He has mental issues and needs help. Bonaventure is corrupt, as has been proven in the past. These two make a nice pair. If Brooks was a Republican he'd be dragged over the coals. Get rid of this guy before he hurts someone or himself. I'm sure we can do better than him.

  2. Please note how quickly authorities moved to "protect" Kirkpatrick. Compare that with the way an "ordinary" citizen is treated. How many times have we read or heard about a woman threatened by a stalker, ex-husband or boyfriend being assaulted or killed after going to the police and the response is, "Well, we couldn't do anything until something actually happened?" Also, we often see the hypocrisy exhibited by those such as NYC Mayor Bloomberg who call for "gun control" all the while being "protected by hordes of gun toting personnel. While I believe authorities acted properly in Kirkpatrick's case - they should be just as quick to act when it's Jane Doe.

  3. Fink - The GOP House in Washington hates women and will not pass the Violence Against Women Act. This type of thinking permeates down - that's why women are ignored by law enforcement until it's too late.

  4. Whether it's temporary or not, Mr. Brooks doesn't seem to comprehend simple functioning--of the Legislature and public behavior in general. Of course the media and others will be expecting an explanation of what he did and what he was thinking. If he wants to retain options for the future he needs to apologize and RESIGN. Perhaps in a few years he might run for election again. But give it serious time. Parties of the first part (Ensign, Edwards, Weiner....) just don't seem to realize how they have violated the public trust--when it was their OBLIGATION to maintain appropriate decorum in all circumstances. AFTER RESIGNATION, he should come up with something better than others misunderstood him.

  5. Judy: Law enforcement declines to release WHO REPORTED Brooks--doesn't seem to be Kirkpatrick. Other reports indicate his spouse has been in contact with law enforcement--ahead of this incident. Sounds like an inevitable event that he's going to do something stupid sooner or later--perhaps due to "stress" or "illness."

  6. Pocket dial? Yea right, this Constable has a mole in his office who is calling others and allowing them to listen in to his conversations! That is the more plausible explanation.

I'm sorry but this entire story is so juvenile. "Pocket dial." Laughable!

Can't everyone just behave? Stop acting like damn juveniles.

This goes to EVERYONE involved in this laughing stock of a story.

    Honestly, behave!

  7. The attacks on Brooks are pure racism, and the comments about Kirkpatrick are sexist I just got off the phone with Putin in Russia, he has volunteered to come out to Nevada to stop corruption.

  8. I vote to expel assemblyman "Michael Jackson" Brooks

  9. I just hope there is some actual work done up there in the capitol without the drama. C'mon folks save the drama for your mama and get to work. The public should wait for all the evidence to pan out , for all we know this could be a witch hunt to hang a guy out to dry.
