Updated Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 | 3:39 p.m.

Assemblyman Steven Brooks, accused of threatening to "do in" the Democratic leader of the Assembly, arrived in Carson City with a heavy police presence today, spending less than an hour holed up with legislative police and staff before leaving the Legislature. Brooks, carrying a cane, wearing dark sunglasses and covering his head with a beige hood, was whisked by police into the Legislative Building and ushered into a closed conference room on the first floor of the building. As legislative staff attempted to divert reporters, Brooks was escorted out of the building after his meeting with police. Brooks uttered a ...

  1. Mr. Brooks, why not do the right and honourable thing and just simply resign effective immediately and get the help you need.

  2. So let me get this straight - all these public resources are being used because someone said they heard someone else say they heard this guy say he was going to do someone in?

I haven't read anything that this guy has actually made a direct threat to someone to place them in imminent fear of physical harm.

In fact, the "corroborated evidence" that detectives spoke about - never materialized. There was no shootout and the guy never shot himself - alleged threats made by this guy. In fact, the arrest doesn't show that this guy did anything to place anyone in danger.

I find it hard to believe that any prosecutor would, in their right mind, think they can convict someone for saying they are going to "do in" someone.

Maybe this will teach him a lesson that he shouldn't jump on the gun totting bandwagon.

If any prosecution it should be for the weapon. That will bring out all these 2nd amendment chicken hawks.

  3. "I find it hard to believe that any prosecutor would, in their right mind, think they can convict someone for saying they are going to "do in" someone."

Whoa? Let anyone say that to you about your wife or kids and lets see if you sing a different tune!

RobRB -- assuming for the sake of argument what he's accused of is true, that's up to the legislature and his constituents, not you.

  5. He broke the law
and Obama should tell him to go to jail.
We do not need violence from these Democrats....
he needs to be put away for a long long time given the anti-gun stance of the country.
    Democrats - liberals
Why do you hate America so much with your poor legislators in office like this man?
    he does not represent us
he is just a bad punk and needs to feel the justice of the American criminal system,
Furthermore the Las Vegas Sun should put in their headline that he is a Democrat.

  6. What is so odd about this

Its a Democrat accused of wanting to do in a fellow Democrat

We need Obama to weigh in on this one immeditaely....
    but he won't

  7. Democrats are too violent. Scary folks. Dems should be prevented from owning guns.

  8. If he ran for president the 47% ers would still vote for him.

  9. unlv702: I'll bet some of these mass murderers made comments like that just before they went on their killing spree. So which is it. See the signs and get these people mental health, or ignore the signs, allow them to do harm, then drag throught the media pointing the finger at people that legally own fire arms.

  10. lovestohike,

What has Obama got to do with a NV State Assembly member, or NV gun laws?

Wouldn't Governor Sandoval be the appropriate person to take action or weigh in on a State issue, or the NV Attorney General?

I'm not sure about whether there is an issue about Brooks having a gun in his car since open carry is generally permitted in Nevada. However, for open carry in a vehicle, the firearm must be clearly visible if upon the person.

If he just left the gun in an unattended car, visible or not, I don't know if that is against NV state law. Commonsense tells me that leaving a gun in an unattended car, in visible sight of people passing by would be against the law, but I could be wrong. Perhaps it wasn't visible, but in an unattended car is the issue.

It seems Brooks might be charged on the gun in the car, if it violates NV law.

'Do in' could have multiple meanings, just like when someone says 'I'm going to kill him' as an expression of anger or frustration, without actual intent to carry that out.

Words have many implications and reflect on the people who use them, no matter who or where they are spoken or written.
