These girls simply don’t mess around, and they sure don’t pull any punches; the grunts and groans are for real. It was the weekend debut of the Women of Wrestling Superheroes at Eastside Cannery, and fans loved the faceoff. Forget lipstick and eye shadow; this was mascara mayhem.

Contributing photographer Steve Spatafore captured the action of the taped global TV spectacular as the girls showed that they really mean business. Flying through the air was never more graceful -- or more punishing.

It was the kickoff of the 2013 season for WOW Superheroes with 30 of the most athletic and punishing power women. When they do battle, it’s no-holds-barred, and the nonstop fighting is riveting entertainment, and it even sometimes involves hairspray and manicured talons as weapons.

The fabulous Lana Star was among the top superheroes inside the ring. Other femme fatales included tag team Caged Heat (the duo of Loca and Delta Lotta Pain), Fire, Frost, Pain and Jungle Grrrl.

They are so physical with high-flying flips, dives from 20-foot ladders, power bombs and drop kicks, you wonder how anybody survives to fight another day. The wrestling women say it’s about power, ambition and assertiveness. It sure is about dedication to fitness and health, strength and agility.

WOW is a venture masterminded by Las Vegas executive Rand Capp and L.A. Lakers executive Jeannie Buss revived from its original 2000 launch. The TV series fights will be a regular Las Vegas attraction.
