A Metro Police officer apparently shot himself after killing his wife and child and setting their Boulder City home on fire, authorities said Monday afternoon. Henderson Police spokesman Keith Paul said the tragedy unfurled this morning at about 8:20 a.m. when a man called 911, confessed that he had shot his wife and child and said he planned to shoot himself, too. The caller also warned the emergency dispatchers he would shoot any police officer sent to try to stop him. What is going on at Metro? What is Gillespie doing? I know he fired a good Sgt but keeps others protected. Considering the number of officers who have committed crimes in the last year Gillespie looks like he's driving with his hand off the wheel.
I dont get it.. Why not kill yourself and let the others live? Burning the house is another #Knucklehead move..
Gillespie asks us to reserve judgment? It seems a fact that one of his Metro officers became a murderer; a murderer of his own family. Bless the wife and little boy, but pray tell, dear Sheriff, what judgement, other than total outrage and complete condemnation, is left for us to reserve?
Within the shadows of "responsible" firearm ownership an uncontrollable beacon of FACT emerges revealing that the once responsible firearm owner can at any moment in time become a murderous criminal.
Perhaps the ignorant can now be enlightened by the FACT that there is absolutely NOTHING which can prevent a determined person from becoming a murderous monster -- including those which are ARMED with the exempted trust of protecting us against such horrors.

I guess we should ban cops from using guns too. If we banned the guns they wouldn't be used to kill kids. Isn't that the argument of the day. Banning guns solves everything right!

I always have to laugh when I read comments like the one from a neighbor who says "you know it is quiet here" and "we live here for a reason,and the reason is to avoid things like this". Do people really think they are immune to incidents like domestic violence? Do people think that since they buy a home in a nice neighborhood that they now live in some imaginative bubble where they may never see violence. So let me get thins straight I am going to buy a home in a nice area thinking that violence will never happen, boy where have we gone wrong in our thinking.
Pale, chances are better in a nicer neighborhood. Period. No one is immune from tragedy. But I don't live on an alphabet street for a reason.

If you think you are safer in a section 8 development, or in some type of transient apartments in North Las Vegas in lieu of Anthem, Summerlin, Southern Highlands....
I can only offer you're on another planet. You absolutely DO increase your chances of seeing violence and being a victim of violence in the former. Crime stats don't lie.
No neighborhood or development is 100% immune from violence but you can certainly decrease your chances by picking a better place to live.
I am proud to be a resident of this town regardless of the possibility that things like this can happen. My prayers go out to the family.
This was not some street crime or gang related incident, it was domestic violence. So living in the "better" areas is a guarantee that this will not happen. The point I am trying to make is not whether someone lives in some crime ridden neighborhood or on a "lettered street" or in an area where the homes are $250K or higher, domestic violence, spousal abuse, and even drug dealing will happen. And if people think that moving to certain areas will make them immune from this then they must be living on another planet.
No one said IMMUNE, but you CAN lessen the chances. If you don't understand that then I dont know what to say. Besides that, spousal abuse is not something that will likely affect a neighbor like drug dealing, burglary, armed robbery or vandalism as the undesirables will be in the neighborhood, greatly increasing the chance that when you walk your dog you might become a victim. It's not difficult to understand.
What you are saying seems to be that you're just as safe in any neighborhood because a crime can happen anywhere. There is no guarantee of safety anywhere but you CAN lessen your chances by moving to a better neighborhood. Check crime stats to see where more crimes happen on a per Sq mile area in Las Vegas. Yeesh.

tragic, but if guilty it was double murder, So much for screening of cops and gun owners. Everyone else gets perp walked and smeared before the media. On rule for them another for everyone else.

But this is a great example or the stupidity of the anti-gun nut argument that are making headway with punishing good people for the mistakes of bad people. It must be brought up however because a rollover is not an option. I did not commit a crime and new rules are being written for people like me that did no wrong.
This must be used as an example to the nut jobs that are winning the war of loss of personal freedoms because of their ability to articulate their denial that evil exists and their belief that things like this can be prevented.
Evil exists, and this weasel just proved that. He also just proved that no law could have protected the innocent around him as this fool was personally entrusted to do just that. It must be used because the innocent are being used as pawns and rights and freedoms taken away in the name of progress ( I call it denial).

The question isn't about "a" gun or eliminating that right. The question becomes how far are we willing to go in being armed. Where is the line drawn? No law can prevent someone from bringing a Gatling gun into a theater and mowing down 200 in a matter of seconds...but as far as I know we outlaw those guns. It's just too simplistic to say "a nut is going to kill regardless of laws"....
I don't remember anyone but real anti gun people looking to take away someone's handgun. That isn't going to fly and really should not be a part of any Debate. Let's stop catering to the scare tactics of the far left and far right.
Personally, every single person who wants to own a gun should have a background check. Close all the loopholes. This case is nothing more than a cop who went off the rails
Cop or not the man was still human and not immune to the stress of life. Situation is just sad easy to pass judgement inlight of not knowing what was going on in the "man's" world.

Actually the requirement of up to four men to operate the weapon would be the major impediment here. Although the first Gatling gun was capable of firing continuously, it required a person to crank it; therefore it was not a true automatic weapon. Gatling guns are legal if they are only operated by a hand crank.
Pretending that a background check for every single person who wants to own a gun is the cure-all, well, it's just too simplistic to say that. We all know a background check would have allowed Lt. Hans Walters to purchase as many firearms as he wished, and done nothing to head off this tragedy.
While many, you chief among them, exalt law enforcement to some higher state, this incident tells us that even the most highly trained officers working with Hans every day, were unable to detect his mental state. Yet, we tend to take their word as gospel about the intentions/mental state of those they have known for mere seconds.
Failure to spot any warning signs, well, that is the best case scenario here. The worst case is that, in their continued devotion to protect their fellow cop, those around him simply ignored the warning signs.
While many argued that those closest to Holmes, Lanza, Paige, etc, should have predicted their terrible actions how many will lay similar blame at the feet of the men and women supposedly trained to recognize the signs of criminal behavior from someone they worked with every day.

Once again we must wonder what, IF ANY, psychological testing Metro recruiting does. AND, what sort of refresher "testing" or guidance is provided. While everyone faces job stress, family stress, life stress, most of us muddle through with or without help and guidance. Where is it that men get the idea that they have a right to kill their wives and children? Where? You can walk away. You can run away. You can say no more. But you cannot make life-ending decisions for anyone else. Granted, on the job, officers SEEM to make those decisions but they really don't. They must come to terms that THEY don't decide. Often, the Perps decide to suicide by cop or something similar. But that DOESN'T mean you get to carry that "authority" home with you. Life experience, observation, reading should enlighten individuals that MANY HAVE GONE THRU this sort of thing (whatever "caused" the violence) and eventually moved into a better situation without harming anyone.
This is just more death and destruction of people lives due to the terrible economy caused by the greed of rich people.
Terrible statistics like this increase during hard economic times. We just hide this fact and blame it on something else.

We do not know what this man was thinking or feeling. Obviously he had some mental health issues brought upon by --- who knows? We should not try to judge nor figure out why he did this and put blame on ANYTHING. It is sad, sad when a person feels so helpless that they resort to this kind of behavior.
This whole sad incident has nothing to do with guns, gun ownership, the right to own a gun, blah blah blah. As some of you have mentioned, it was this man's mental state at issue. Most police departments DO have counselors available just like any other work place, but you cannot force a person to go. Maybe it was suggested to him to go talk to someone and he refused because, after all, he is a cop and it is not "macho" to go to counseling. So he suffered in silence until he just snapped.
We should not make excuses for someone who kills women and children because they were a cop, or anyone else for that matter. Cab drivers and convenience store clerks have a higher on the job death rate than cops.
Trouble with Metro is that they are given a badge and a gun and a free "get out of jail card" from the DA and at least till recently the media.
Many of then have a mentality similar to OJ Simpson. Everyone his kissing up to them, the politicians, the media, some members of the public. When a cab driver is set on fire, do they close the strip for their funeral? No. They start believing they are special. Look at the way mothers who forget they left a kid in a hot car are treated by the local hate talk radio. They are crucified on the air. Now listen to them about this situation..."cops are under a lot of stress...blah blah..." Who isn't? A card dealer can get fired for making one mistake in this town.
There was a story a number of years ago about how Metro was undermining investigations of spousal abuse by their officers. I wonder if that still goes on?

Sad for sure... I cannot help but mention the religious ideology that we all "just go to the other side" This contributes to these kinds of horrific "familycides" across the globe! What if there is no other side?

Somehow I doubt this was the case here. Making nearly $200,000 in taxpayer dollars, I wouldn't consider this guy a victim of "the terrible economy" or the "greed of rich people."

I have read each and every comment so far and while excluding the haters, I've noticed a common trend at suggesting psychological evaluations being routinely performed on police officers and in-counseling available for officers needing that type of help. The persons suggesting these possible remedies are obviously not in the business, otherwise they would realize any identified psychological treatment for a police officer is "Career Suicide", and any identified police officer receiving psychological treatment (needed or not) is permanently marked and will be sanctioned from performing his or her duties, and God forbid they get into a shooting incident, righteous or not, they will be crucified as soon as that information is made available. But, for those that are interested, the way police officers receive objective and impartial psychological treatment is always on their own, under assumed names, and without any employment intervention. It is just the way it is. Just an old 38 year veteran cop reflecting,

A number of women a few years ago complained that they were bullied when they complained their Metro husband had abused them. A women who complains about their cop husband abusing them is intimidated and threatened. No wonder this woman did not come forward, or did she? Police records should be released on this case.
Our "heroes" routinely murder unarmed civilians- are we really that surprised when they turn on their own? It still amazes me to read the number of people who bring a childlike reverence to the police force, seemingly imagining them all as paragons of society who can do no wrong. Please. Your average LEO is no better than you or I, and most likely worse. Yet we are shocked, shocked! when they committ evil. Get over your hero worship and life in the real world.

Sorry, you're wrong. Maybe years ago it was "career suicide" for a cop to seek counseling, but that is no longer true. No, I am not or ever was "on the job" but 18 years with a cop I sort of knew what went on. Like any other profession, mental health counseling is part of their insurance plans and it no longer holds the stigma as you suggest. And when it is necessary, counseling is highly encouraged no matter what the reason for it.
