The next two games — Wednesday at San Diego State and Saturday at Colorado State — have the chance to define UNLV’s season. It’s more likely that this week won’t be the be-all and end-all for this team, but just the thought that it could be is interesting. For instance, if the Rebels were to break through and win both games, it could propel them to a league title. And if they lose both, especially if they’re not close in either, it could weigh on a team that never figured things out on the road last year. No matter what ...

A regular season Mountain West league title is the goal. Not a MWC tournament title, not just worrying about "what type of seed can we get in the big dance" either. The Rebels are very good but not great, so they won't win the national championship. So short of that, a league title matters. It's what these players and coaches can look back at years later as a true accomplishment, not "well, we made it to the Sweet 16!".
The Rebels have already proved they can't beat a quality team on the road with the losses at North Carolina and New Mexico. They then followed the NM loss with a poor effort against a lesser Air Force team. The season has already been defined. Last year's team was mediocre and couldn't beat quality opponents on the road and this year's team is not as good. This team was overhyped from the start with low IQ and selfish players and is poorly coached. A bunch of thugs to say the least...
Desert your correct, the only thing that matters right now and the top priority should be to improve.
They are a good team, and on their best night they can hang with North Carolina, and New Mexico(They didn't get blown out)
Also, Bennett did have the flu bug thats going around. He should be ready for SDSU.
Thugs? Really? I think we all are going to need to see some evidence to back up that statement.
Thugs? No way. But selfish- yeah, I can buy that. There are usually 5 individuals on the court at the same time- they are not a TEAM. I could see this "team" winning 3-4 more games if they continue to play selfish ball.
2 loses in a row. Commin up.
We've had an average season so far, nothing spectacular. But when we think of all the injuries and waiting for transfer rules to blow over things aren't that bad. There were high expectations and the basis of those expectations haven't been in place so there is no reason to give up on them yet. Once Moser gets better and Bennett isn't sick then we can have something to complain about. The schedule gets tougher but at least the team should be getting better from here on out.
Anthony Marshall, great that you are taking a pass on Twitter for the rest of the season. Nothing positive can be taken from reading the hate from those who could never do what you do. Armchair point guards at best, frustrated ballers in most cases and completely inadequate in their basketball knowledge to criticize your play in almost all of their posts. Keep playing hard and thanks for all you dedication to the Rebels, UNLV and Las Vegas. I appreciate all your hard work...
Anthony... I had you projected to be the assist leader in the MWC. So far, seemingly unbeknownst to our fan base, that's been accurate. Cool thing is... looks like you're just getting warmed up. 12 against AF??? Go Get'em! We'll be there to raise the roof for ya'!!!
BTW... Dave Rice is the winningest 1st year coach in UNLV history. Oh... and he had possibly the best recruiting year ever.
Coach K is the winningest active coach (with time under belt) @ 76.7%
Dave Rice's winning % is 78.4%.
Let's FIRE him now before he gets really good. There are so many other coaches that will come to UNLV amidst a budget crisis, tell the President that he doesn't care how much he's paid, and go 40-12 in 1.5 yrs.
We have a young talented team, and a young talented coaching staff, and we've not had anything close to a cupcake schedule. Nor are we going to. The team that wins the MWC will be lucky to go 12-4 this year, US INCLUDED.
So brace yourselves, count blessings, and enjoy the growth. We're like, 12 years old and 6'7"... gonna take a little time to put one foot in front of the other... but in the mean time, keep up the imperfect, but incredibly good work Rebels!!!
If I was a player, I'd stop listening to this c&#$ too!
Jason your reasonable and pragmatic opinions have no place here.. this is the overreaction theater where the sky is constantly falling.
I really don't mind the criticism of Dave Rice, because every ignorant sports fan always blames the coach, he knew that coming in and that pressure is taken into consideration for his compensation.
That said, it's pathetic how many people are getting on the 18-21 year old kids who are playing basketball as a way to attend college. Outside of Bennett, probably none of the current players will leave early for the NBA, so they should be thought of and treated as student athletes, not as paid professionals. The Rebels are starting 3 guys and have 3 guys coming off the bench with experience that amounts to that of a red shirt freshman. It's got to be disheartening for them to see all the negative comments coming from UNLV "supporters" when they are currently 14-3 and have been in the top 25 for most of the year. I'm not sure if negative Rebel "fans" are impatient, stupid, bitter, or a combination of them all, but I just see them as pathetic. Lighten up and have a little fun, that's all.
