Obama backs gun limits, concedes tough fight ahead

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama endorsed controversial bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines on Monday, as well as stricter background checks for gun buyers — but conceded he may not win approval of all in a Congress reluctant to tighten restrictions. "Will all of them get through this Congress? I don't know," said Obama. He said lawmakers would have to "examine their own conscience" as they tackle gun control legislation after the horrifying Connecticut school shootings but in the face of opposition from the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun rights groups. Obama spoke at a midday White ...

  1. The Bill of Rights are absolutes of American Freedom, not guidelines to violate because you do not like what someone says, their religion or their wanting to carry a gun instead of a cop, because cops are too heavy to carry!

  2. The great comrade needs to gut the constitution one step at a time before he can declare himself dictator for life. It's the only reason to punish people who obey the law for the deeds of a few SCUM.

  3. The Constitution has never allowed the assembly of personal armories for any purpose. Stockpiling of Military weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition is not permitted.

No where in any law of this country is it legal to take up arms against the Government, for any reason, especially the protection of Constitutional rights. Slavery was considered a Constitutional right by the Confederate States, which took up arms against the Union Government to protect their 'rights'.

Slavery was considered not only a Constitutional Right, but a God Given Right. Jefferson Davis called on God to protect the South in it's righteous war. Davis was fighting for God and Country. The claims of the NRA are identical to the antebellum South, those of God given and Constitutional rights to carry guns. Yet the real motive behind the NRA's claim is profit created, the same profit motive that existed in the Confederacy with Slavery. God Given Rights are invariably tied to who gets the money.

  4. The dictator-in-chief hard at work... Gun control isnt about guns, its about control.

  5. "President Barack Obama endorsed controversial bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines on Monday, as well as stricter background checks for gun buyers....."

Two words, Mr. President, proves you a hypocrite -- "Fast & Furious." One sound proves what those who voted you back into office are -- "moooooooooooo"

"The Bill of Rights are absolutes of American Freedom, not guidelines to violate because..."

    19jet54 -- pretty much true.

"The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled several times that NO right is absolute -"

MotorSports -- I dare you to cite one here

"The Constitution has never allowed the assembly of personal armories for any purpose."

SunJon -- I keep reminding you our Constitutions "allow" nothing for individuals, they protect and promise our freedoms by spelling out what our governments can and cannot do. You're completely wrong on everything else, too.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." -- George Orwell's "Animal Farm" (1945)

  6. When the Messiah says you have nothing to worry about... You really have something to worry about. Honesty is just not in his DNA

  7. The far right calls the Pro Choice people all Pro Abortion so by the same logic we can call the Pro Gun people who support keeping assault rifles and high capacity clips legal Pro Mass Murder. Sadly, in the not too distant future, another mass murder will take place by someone who is an unregistered owner of an assault rifle and some 30 round clips. When this happens the Pro Mass Murder people will say, " Now is not the time to talk about it." Since we cannot stop the mass murder without a ban and we all know that congress will not vote against the NRA, here is hoping that the victims will be all Pro Mass Murder people.

  8. "Now what you will do is one of four things...."

MotorSports -- I do none of the above. Instead I'll call and raise you "...the enshrinement of constitutional rights necessarily takes certain policy choices off the table." District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. (slip opinion at 64) (2008).

    Your turn.

"Where rights secured by the Constitution are involved, there can be no rulemaking or legislation which would abrogate them." -- Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436, 491 (1966)

  9. Biden will propose limiting clip sizes in guns used in video games to seven rounds. A big FN deal.

  10. MotorSports,

    Thanks for the informative link!

  11. Enlist all gun owner's into the next war so they can defend the freedom of their gun ownership rights, and let them take their own guns with them.

For those who have no ability to recognize sarcasm, that is an example.

  12. All executive orders concerning guns from the TOTUS should be tried out in Chicago to determine if they have any effect at all.

  13. Motor: Obama will appear today with "the children" who wrote him various gun control letters. I want background checks on the children to ensure that they in fact actually wrote the letters. Such a loser. But he does appeal to the typical low-information Obama voter, ie you.

  14. @KillerB oh I forgot - MOVE THE GOAL POSTS. That is one of your favorites. You said I dare you to give one source and I did.
    --------
He always does that. It's called obfuscating when confronted with facts.

  15. Justice Antonin Scalia, states: "Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited"". It is ""not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose."

"We also recognize another important limitation on the right to keep and carry arms. Miller (an earlier case) said, as we have explained, that the sorts of weapons protected were those "in common use at the time". We think that limitation is fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of 'dangerous and unusual weapons.'
    -----------
Seems to me that Obama has wide latitude to limit 2nd amendment rights.
