WASHINGTON — Richard Nixon would have turned 100 today, and his old friends will gather at a hotel near the White House to toast the memory of the 37th president. What is not said also will say much about his evolving legacy, because no protesters or seething Nixon-haters are expected outside the doors. Nixon left the White House arguably the most polarizing political figure of his generation, the only president ever to resign the office, one whose very name instilled passion and even hatred. The thing about Nixon is that he had no need to find out what his opponents were doing via wiretapping and burglary. He had won reelection easily.
It seems Nixon started to believe his own authority, greatness and power of office gave him a carte blanche. Just beating his opponents wasn't enough, he wanted to crush and destroy. In this respects he was dangerous and if he had gotten away with Watergate he might have done far worse.
The medical program Nixon wanted was like Obamacare but with a strong public option Ted Kennedy wanted single payer and the deal fell through. Hopefully out great Senator Harry Reid will live to 100 so he can do more good things.
