Updated Monday, Jan. 7, 2013 | 5 p.m.

Two men tried to kill Robert Bessey, 49, on Nov. 14 at 4:35 a.m. as he was driving south on Interstate 15 near Valley of Fire. A gold SUV pulled up to his rear driver’s side window and a shot was fired, striking Bessey in the back of the neck, police said. Bessey was in the midst of a divorce with his wife, Amy Bessey, 32, of North Las Vegas. If he died before the divorce was finalized, his wife and children would collect $400,000 in life insurance and other benefits, a Metro Police arrest report said. But Robert Bessey ...

  1. sounds like a nice girl.

  2. Seems like the only one with any sense is Robert and he was trying to get away from the circus. How come she didn't go by her husbands name? Also I was unaware of a life insurance policy becoming void on account of a divorce.
In either case I hope these people get a good long term to think about their plot.

  3. Any word on how Robert is recovering from the shooting? What an ordeal - however what a lucky man to survive the shooting and that family.

  4. The little miss and her cohorts might consider that he might have CHANGED THE BENEFICIARY prior to filing for divorce. Actually, not having the spouse or any significant other as beneficiary might be wise. Could name someone beneficiary / trustee to use insurance proceeds per revocable trust, for the kids, for aged parents...... I've seen that you CAN name the County Administrator as Trustee / Executor. But then, every now and then, a Nevada administrator is caught with hand in the cookie jars--amazing that they are caught cause who ever looks?

  5. Amazing to consider that if you're gonna be the victim of a very violent crime, the Perps are quite likely to be closely related or involved in your life. Number 1 killer of pregnant women--the fathers. Add up all the random killers, spree killers, serial....and chances are still the Perps gonna be your semi-significant other or the previous semi-significant.

  6. @Roslenda,

The rules are kind of strange on life insurance policies. Once you've named a spouse as a beneficiary, you need his or her signature to change beneficiaries or to even add one (for instance if you decide you want half of the policy to go to your adult child or something.)Hopefully he simply cancelled the policy. That's easy enough to do.

@casinokid, Not every woman takes her husband's last name. When I remarried, I kept my original married name because it was my son's last name, changing them is a pain, and I like the name.

She seems like a real piece of work. Who grins in a mugshot?! Of course, who tries to murder someone instead of simply getting a divorce? A sociopath does.

  7. The article also states, "There were also accusations that Robert Bessey had a history of abusing Michael Bessey and Amy Pearson. Michael Bessey told police that his father had mentally and physically abused them, while one witness told police Robert Bessey had pulled a gun on Pearson in the past." Should be an interesting defense.

  8. Accusations that Victim had done things. Well gee, maybe he felt the hostility and reacted to that. Perhaps he was always looking over his shoulder, jumpy. Not saying the (alleged) abuse would be the best way to handle it but let's allow that not every individual is perfectly developed emotionally, mentally, physically. We are unable to predict how an individual will act or react in a given situation.

By Next: OK fine. I'm suggesting that we might do well to NOT name a spouse as a beneficiary in ANYTHING--way too many crimes against spouses and significant others--let's get the money incentives out of this.
