Pedestrian crossing Tropicana is struck, killed

Updated Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 | 1:04 p.m.

A pedestrian was hit and killed Friday night while crossing Tropicana Avenue, said Metro Police Lt. Nichole Splinter. Around 11:40 p.m., the man was struck between Decatur Boulevard and Cameron Street. Splinter said the man was taken to University Medical Center and later pronounced dead. In a news release, Metro Police said witnesses reported a 2003 Lexus GS 300 was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Tropicana Avenue. Police said the man was crossing Tropicana Avenue from the north side to the south side, outside of a marked crosswalk. The accident is under investigation.

  1. What is the definition of a traffic fatality.....Didn't a few people already die??

  2. Las Vegas is setting a record pace for the expediency rate it executes its pedestrians! Something for both the residence of Las Vegas as well a Metro to be proud of, I am sure! At this rate the war on pedestrians should be an easy victory without any doubt! Congratulations to all, job well done and keep up the good work!

  3. When people stop darting across the street at dusk, wearing all black then MAYBE the pedestrians will stop getting hit - I see it A LOT - Granted, there's too much distracted driving going on as well but the pedestrians don't seem to 'get it' when it comes to their own safety.. If you think I'm kidding check out Boulder Highway at dusk and see for yourself.

  4. I would say the LVMPD should cite more people for not using the cross walk, but Las Vegas was designed without pedestrians in mind. If you want to take a leisurely walk to the store across the street, the crosswalk might be a half mile away. If it's at an intersection with a turn signal, you can add 20 minutes to your walk.

It is odd that more hasn't been done to prevent these unnecessary fatalities. Every time I travel at night someone dressed in dark clothing darts across the street. Some are drunk and homeless and appear to be attempting suicide. I went for a walk my self a week ago and when I attempted to cross the street in a crosswalk, a LVMPD officer almost ran me over. Of course in his defense, I was wearing dark clothing and the sun had just set.

I guess the best thing is for pedestrians to pay more attention when crossing the street and for drivers to be more focused on what's in front of them.

  5. I could get into the mechanics of why so many pedestrians are killed in this city (i.e. defensive driving skills, peripheral vision at night with tint, crosswalks located in multiple lanes etc.) But at the end of the day you can't fix stupid, and stupid is a common denominator in Blue States!

  6. ANOTHER pedestrian was murdered tonight on Warm Springs Road. And AGAIN Metro finds the driver was in the right. The road had NO street lights at all. NONE! And the driver claims to NOT have seen the pedestrian. Well IF you look at the video footage? The front of this drivers SUV? Was destroyed! You don't get that kind of damage on the front of an SUV from a human body when your driving 20 or 30 MPH! The damage that was done to this drivers car? He HAD to be doing well over 50 miles an hour. Down a road with NO street lights! Does that sound like someone who was driving with due care or diligence to you? But hey, Metro thinks the driver was in the right! Kudos to you Metro for a job well done!

  7. @BeSafest, yes, that's why 9 out of 10 of the least educated states are red. Remember, if you took the top 10% brightest people from a red state and moved them to a blue state, the average IQ of both states would drop 20 points.

  8. @BeSafest,

You couldn't be any more clueless if you tried.

  9. @dukeofdeath - 3 paragraphs and you basically end up saying the same thing I did. Drivers need to pay more attention to the road and less to their fricken cell phones and pedestrians need to stop running out into the middle of the street - ESPECIALLY when it's dark out and they're wearing clothes so dark they can barely be seen by even the most attentive of drivers out there. It's truly a give/take situation here.

  10. Duke, some "designers" particularly of athletic attire have incorporated the glow-in-dark strips all over their clothing. Maybe it should be mandatory on outerwear (jackets). Casino gift shops should be REQUIRED to carry the straps that you can put around ankles, legs, arms, hats. Try the bicycle shops.
