Grand bargains give way to legislative quick fixes

WASHINGTON — The confusing struggle to head off a national fiscal crisis has made one thing crystal clear: The era of the Big Deal is over. Despite repeated, intense and personal efforts byPresident Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner as well as bipartisan coalitions, gangs of senators, supercommittees, special commissions and wonky outsiders, the grand bargain remains the elusive holy grail of fiscal policy and seems destined to stay that way for now. “We don’t seem to be able to do grand bargains very well,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who has long been a force for compromise. While ...

  1. All of the currents problems can be corrected, can be resolved. This all can be done with reasonable minds addressing the problems and working for the so-called "greater good" for all Americans. Somehow lawmakers in Washington have lost their collective minds and many have gone against long standing conventions, and traditional agreements that would be intact, and be strengthen, after an expected political fight on issues or a crisis facing the nation.

In other words, "having a disagreement, but maintaining your political and partisan integrity."

This is not happening in Washington and in many State Houses. Or more to the point, this is coming from places with Republican control...now labeled the, " The Party of the Unreasonable."

Further more, it is becoming clear there is more to it than just being in disagreement with the President's agenda. or his ideology. There is a picture emerging, being shaped by the actions and the words from Republican lawmakers, both State and Federal, supporting a general theme of saying "NO" to anything the President proposes, while stripping voting rights and individual liberties. With this being the priority of the current Republican Party, why would they want to help solve the problems in the USA? This is counter to their current actions and the words coming from the Republican leadership.

The common thread throughout this episode is the manner and the means, and demographics, of the people, individuals, and groups in opposition to "this" president. The evidence funnels into an area of comfort and of practice from those who are in strict opposition to President Obama. This President, like no other President is our lifetime is being treated differently. Being outright disrespected, shameful actions and words coming from the opposition, even if it means harm to the Nation. All coming from those who oppose "this" president! Why? Why is this President being treated differently? Why?

President Obama has thick skin, he can tell the difference from being in disagreement, and being an obstructionist. So can the majority of the America People. November 6, 2012 spoke volumes on the direct of this Country. The losing party wants the benefits, but they don't want the leader. Why?

Bias, prejudice and special treatment is what this President has received from day one of his presidency, from the opposition. The actions and the words from the opposition against "this" president lead to one conclusion...Racism!

  2. Longtime,

I couldn't disagree with you more. You may think Obama is the savior of the world but I see him as nothing but a puppet. He doesn't have a clue how to lead. He is great at making excuses and whining though.

I think both parties are horrendously misguided and since we have actually managed to elect a pack of followers instead of any leaders this problem isn't going away.

As for your disrespect assertions; I guess you were sleeping while Bush was president.
