WASHINGTON — The Associated Press has learned that the Homeland Security Department official in charge of the agency's immigration enforcement and removal operations has resigned after hundreds of illegal immigrants were released from jails because of government spending cuts.
In an email obtained Wednesday by the AP, Gary Mead told coworkers that he was leaving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the end of April. Mead is the head of enforcement and removal operations at ICE.
Mead had told co-workers of his resignation in the email sent Tuesday, hours after U.S. officials had confirmed that a few hundred illegal immigrants facing deportation had been released from immigration jails due to budget cuts.
President Barack Obama's spokesman said Wednesday the White House was never consulted but described the immigrants as "low-risk, non-criminal detainees."

Yayyy! Instead of just deporting them, we let them run free in our country! I cant wait to pay more taxes to support these illegals! Wooooooo Hoooooo!
The US has such a bright future at this rate...
Obama wanted all those "FUTURE DEMOCRATS" back on the loose.
He should not be permitted to resign. He should be fired. Those that he released will never show up to their hearings and will do their best to blend in to stay here. Once released, where did they go? How will they support themselves? What about medical? That's right, they will be on the Taxpayer's dole.
Already, the conspiracy theorists are at it!!
1. Mead did not "resign" or "quit", he retired after 60 (SIXTY) years of Federal employment.
2. He told his supervisors about his decision weeks ago, he just went public within the agency.
3. Obama was apparently as surprised as the rest of us at the release of low-priority detainees. READ THE LEGISLATION! How to cut spending is an individual agency's decision. Nothing requires the President to be involved, or even advised, about every last detail of every action by every agency. There will be so much cutting that NOBODY will be able to understand the effects of every last individual action - much less personally review and approve each one.
4. Face it - no matter WHAT this President does, or doesn't do, there's a swarm of Republican'ts ready and eager to sic a dog on him
Clearly Obama personally ordered these blood crazed uber criminals to be released(and given Obamaphones) so they can go to secret UN-NATO troop bases all over the southwest to join in the up coming offensive to take everyone's guns.
About time, let's roll..
The POTUS always seems to have his head turned when his administration does something stupid. Obama's administration is out of control. Remants of Benghazi.Who's in charge?!
Benghazi! This has gotta be connected! I bet all these illegal immigrants released were Libyan.
:)
Since 1980, the number of incarcerated persons in America has climbed from 800,000 to about 2,300,000. Jail seems to be the solution to everything in America, including simple marijuana convictions. There must be tens of thousands of people behind bars that don't deserve and should not be there.
In May, 2011 the California Supreme Court ordered a massive inmate release to relieve California's prisons. Even so, Apple continues to make massive profits, Disneyland hasn't closed and California continues grow rapidly.
Goodbye Gary Mead! You can probably make more money with a Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream concession. If that doesn't work, try baking bagels.
Leaving THAT particular job? What did Obama promote him to?
We've imported 20 million illegal invaders who will do ANYTHING to further their dreams of wealth--kill, steal, embezzle, defraud. SOME of them are in jail. Per Supreme Judge, Nevada spends $50,000 a DAY on ILLEGAL prisoners incarcerated for violent crimes. So SunJon, redo your calcs but now include the populations of Latin America as the base and yo see that incarceration has DECREASED SINCE 1980. I agree that mandatory sentences for Marijuana have got to go. We need the cell space to keep violent offenders inside forever--and break this cycle of release, run/fun for Perps, Cops and robbers played at our expense by law enforcement, public defender costs at our expense, re-incarcerate the same Perps. And the worst, victims of violent crime and survivors / family of victims pay forever and ever for the trauma caused by stupidity in our government and courts.
Cries to the contrary, we will never try to deport +20 million illegals in this country. Just ain't gonna happen. Best we can do is better secure the border & ports, in both directions; put real teeth into employer penalities; aggressively target the criminal predators in their midst; implement policies that facilitate integration & assimilation; and devise a better immigration system. Most of that is the responsibility of the Feds, but given their sheer ineptitude & suspect malfeasance, the States can elect to initiate some action on the employer sanction, predator targeting, and integration & assimilation fronts. DC is a joke -- they can't even come up with a budget while driving toweards insolvency, so it's really up to the States to try and get a handle on immigration (along with education, the economy, and probably healthcare). And the sooner CC & the Gov show some leadership on these issues the better off we will all be.
It is up to each secretary and director of each agency to determine where cuts are made. If they decide to release dangerous criminals, lay off Air Traffic controllers, TSA AGENTS (Not a big loss there), that is their decision. I think both sides of the aisle are fear mongering (?).
