I can’t comprehend the logic and reasoning of some elected leaders and letter writers regarding trash and recycling. Those who want to recycle will make an effort to go in their garages and place items in a bin. What is the difference if it is a particular bin or a large bulk container? Unfortunately, some are lazy and just toss recyclables in the trash. It is not necessary for a once-a-week pickup of recycling. But trash collection should be twice a week due to the volume and foul odor of bagged food and pet waste, etc. Decrease in service with ...

Dean says "But trash collection should be twice a week due to the volume and foul odor of bagged food and pet waste, etc."
Hugh volume problem - Wow how many people, cats and dogs live in your house.
How much waste are you generating
Take a look at reducing your waste
What are you throwing away everyday
Get control of your life
What is the fascination with storing garbage in your garage in this burg? At least put a lid on the container. Storing garbage in an enclosed area when temperatures are in the 100's in the summer is obviously going to cause a stench. As for the current bins for recycling; they are a joke. We sort the stuff and the recycle truck driver tosses it all in one receptacle on the truck. Screw that. Give me two large lidded bins, and I'll take care of the rest. If your recycle bin isn't full, don't put it out for collection until it is. Store your bins OUTSIDE and the odor problem is solved.
I agree with Gary and Future's comments above. I have the same two poly cart setup at my home in Texas, one trash poly cart the other for recyclables and one trash pickup per week. It works fine. If a larger family needs an additional trash poly cart then they can get one for an additional $7.50 per month.
My neighbors beside me and across from me in the alley have an agreement to use any extra space in our poly cart should we not use fully the space for our own trash. In other words, once the poly cart is wheeled to the alley we use the extra space in our neighbors poly cart for our trash should it exceed the space limits of our own poly cart and vice versa. I also have an agreement with my neighbor across the alley that if either of us forgets to wheel our poly carts down to the alley by 8:00am on trash pickup day then whomever notices he/she will wheel the cart down to the alley as a courtesy. If you recycle then you should have nearly equal amounts in each poly cart, trash and recyclables.
My recyclables are consistently more than my trash. Typically the recyclable container is full to the brim and the trash bin is half full. We have the small containers. Not necessary for the larger ones even for the recyclables. I'm not sure how Republic Services knew what sizes we in the community would need, but it was exactly right. Occasionally, rarely, I see a large container switched out for the small one. But it is so rare, as to be meaningless. Odors? Nonsense. Both containers are in my garage. Rinse them out and let air dry. Use bags to hold and limit garbage smell from those occasional items that do. If the smell lingers, use a spray of bleach. Simple. Geez....Much trash talk about nothing.

The trash wars trash talking continues..
Future ridicules, freeman reposts his trashy trash copy and paste, carmine says his trash doesn't smell, and all of them bow to their corporate masters.
There may be good reason to change the system, but you guys are going to have to do a better job of explaining or it looks like your lack of candor negates your points of view.
JeffFromVegas,
Of the 5 posted comments above, I find yours the least informative.
"carmine says his trash doesn't smell, and all of them bow to their corporate masters." @ Jeff
If the Republic Services' employees are "corporate masters" then I bow to them. It's a dirty, rotten, rancid job, but somebody has to do it...and Republic Services do a yeomen's job. Hip hip hurray.

Until Republic Services distributed $290,000 to our local and state politicians few were ever concerned with changing our very good for us, long term, trash hauling contracts. Then along came the cash contribution prize winners, county councilman Steve Sisolak ($30,000) and Las Vegas Ward 6 councilman Steve Ross ($10,000) and all of a sudden we all needed a major change to Republic's contract. As Dean Kaneko pointed out, Republic expects some now too lazy to recycle will do so if given a new trash on wheels container. Why didn't Republic test this approach without changing the contract - you know swap the goofy bins we are still paying for and give us the recycling container? They didn't because it doesn't generate any additional profit. They used the "revenue neutral" cover saying that they needed to absorb the expense of replacing old trucks with new trucks that eliminate one worker per truck. Nonsense, they replace trucks by attrition now and will continue to do so in the future. As to the smelly garbage in you garage, not to worry. They have also greased the political campaign coffers in Carson City. Lawmakers are pushing through legislation that will override any prohibition in your community about placing trash cans in your front yard for the next millennium.

I say:
Of all the comments posted yours is the least interesting. At least you didn't regurgitate the bit about your Mommy and Daddy's Garbage pickup.
Garbage and Guns! Get your Las Vegas Sun!!! Garbage and Guns...
JeffFromVegas,
Not everything is political. You try so hard to turn a letter subject into a political point and unfortunately for you, it doesn't land. If you don't find my posts interesting to read then why do you reference my posts? Why not just post your own original thoughts? It's really not that difficult Jeff.
It's odd that many medium and large sized cities across the nation have been on the same 2 poly cart/one trash pickup per week setup and routine for years, in my case, 18 years yet Richard Rychtarik seeks to politicize it. I respect Richard's opinion however, Richard does not work for Republic Services. How would he know the full cost of the two bin setup? Will republic be required to go to more trash collection trucks that side-loads versus top-loads trash into the truck? Does Richard realize that recyclable collection goes up when homes are not limited to a small bin? Apparently not.
Freeman states:

I say:
If you sincerely wanted an answer to your questions (you didn't) why would you not wait for Richard to answer? (should I answer my own question also? Nah, I will wait for some obscure unlinked data that purports to show Freeman in a favorable light but was probably data commissioned by the trash industry).
OK Freeman, answer please...
JeffFromVegas posted a link to a Penn & Teller "BS" episode on another letter that portrayed recycling in a questionable light at best. Without regard for the truth of the claims made there, if we are going to have recycling then the new system is FAR better than the old one if only because the neighbors no longer get to see how much beer one drinks during the week if one recycles.
JeffFromVegas,
I stand by my thoughts and points in my four comments above. No one has so far compelled me to add to what I've already written.
RefNV,
If you live in Texas, why is what happens in Vegas any of your business?
I find the twice a week pick up is needed, once a week for recycles works good for me. I store trash can outside now, but still it gets ripe after a few days..
I am in favor of the recycling component of the new plan...
HOWEVER...
For those of you unawares, every HOA that I'm aware of REQUIRES homeowners to keep the trash can in the garage (or 'out of sight'; where else would you keep it?)
When June-September rolls around and those 100+ degree days roll around, the garbage get's RIPE.
I don't care that the new containers have lids; I'd sure hope so; regardless, the garbage will stink to high heaven by the time a week goes by.
why on Earth do you think we HAVE twice-a-week collection now???
IMO, this is a CLEVER PLAN by Republic Services to increase their profits; trash collecting is HUUUGE BUSINESS...and they make a LOT of campaign contributions, INCLUDING to those folks VOTING on this new plan...call me skeptical!
Waaa Waaaa , HOA members you get what you deserve belonging to one of those corrupt orginizations . Just put the trash to the curb , don't worry about the recycables it all gets sorted later anyway. You can't fight the system ,Republic bribes the politicians and gets thier way every time, that's Vegas.
