The homeless are so numerous here you can’t drive past without being reminded that many in the Las Vegas Valley are paycheck away from a similar fate. The intersection of Foremaster Lane and Main Street has always been known as a hub for the homeless due to nearby services. For local government, the cluster of destitute has mostly presented an impossible issue — how to stem the growing tide of homeless, many of them military veterans who brought home a variety of mental or physical ailments from the world of warfare. Yet even here, there exists a haven. A hope. ...

Many a paycheck away. Why is that? Why isn't K-12 explaining to everyone that you must build up at 8-12 month emergency fund? It takes almost a year to earn UC coverage. And even that, Unemployment Comp, won't cover all the bills if you're living paycheck to paycheck--spending every dime you get. Sure, it's difficult to discipline yourself but look around--at the homeless and at those asking for hand outs--on the streets, in front of stores, on Craig's List, on Freecycle, everywhere you turn. And even think of "friends" and relatives who keep hitting you up for anything you can spare to help them--when they fail to sock away a few bucks.
Gee, even if it's not your first job, do you think you're guaranteed an income?
