The North Las Vegas City Council voted Wednesday on a resolution to change the current sound management rules for model aircraft operators at Willie McCool Fly Field, 4400 Horse Drive. More than 20 people, many of them aircraft fliers, attended the meeting to voice their opinions on the issue.
The issue: The proposed resolution addresses the noise complaints that nearby residents have filed. The current regulation allows both electric- and gas-powered remote control aircrafts to be flown from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day and not exceed 98 decibels. Despite the rules, residents claim the aircrafts are too noisy, wake them up early and pose a safety risk. The resolution would limit fuel-powered engine operations to 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday hours extended to 8 p.m. Model fliers must also muffle the noise their aircrafts make.
The vote: 5-0 in favor.
What it means: The resolution struck a compromise between model aircraft fliers and the park’s surrounding residents. It allows more quiet hours for neighbors, but gives model operators plenty of time to fly their planes. The city council even amended the resolution to include an extra day of extended hours at the discretion of the city manager to satisfy one user’s complaint. If this new resolution doesn’t dissolve the issue, the next step might include limiting the field to only electric engine model aircrafts.
