Las Vegas council OKs purchase of parking meters that accept plastic payment

A month after delaying the issue for further study, the Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday approved a $1.4 million proposal to install multibay parking meters that accept debit and credit cards. The issue: Whether the city should replace 1,216 coin-operated parking meters downtown by approving a contract to purchase the new parking meters from Parkeon, a New Jersey-based company. The vote: Approved 5-2, with Council members Ricki Barlow and Lois Tarkanian opposed.   1. I have used these meters in other cities such as Chicago and find them easy to use and very convenient since you no longer have to get change. This makes sense, for the city and its residents. If grandma and grandpa still want to carry quarters they can still use change.

  2. It's about time Vegas joins the modern world. In most, if not all, of the major cities from Denver to L.A. and beyond where I have traveled these "plastic coin" meters are everywhere in the downtown districts. Super convenient to swipe and move on.

    Who says Vegas is a backwater town??

  3. Whoooooooooaaaaaa........I thought the city was broke and could afford anything??? Can't pay for cops but money for this huh?
