Amargosa Valley — A confrontation spurred after a man allegedly pulled a gun on four teenage boys turned fatal Sunday in Amargosa Valley. Deputies found John Sprague suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen just before 4 p.m., the Nye County Sheriff’s Office said. Sprague died during transport to a hospital. Deputies arrested 58-year-old Avery Church, Amargosa Valley, on one count of murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Here is what deputies described from their investigation: The dispute began Friday, when Church, the four teenage boys and an adult family member began arguing at a residence. Church pulled ...

Guns don't kill teenagers.
Unhinged gun nuts with guns do.
Even if Church's claim of "self-defense" has any merit at all, why did Sprague decide to confront Church himself rather than call the cops?!?
Church had already committed at least two illegal acts that should have been reported. Church had clearly demonstrated that he was a danger.
The fatality was completely avoidable. Handled in the correct way Church would still have been arrested and Sprague would still be alive.
I'm guessing that it went down something like this. The four boys where messing around Church's property on Friday and he got into a verbal confrontation with them and then went to one of the parents houses to complain. The parents backed up their kids and Church pulled a gun on them and left. On Sunday, the four boys went back to Church's house to further harrass him from across the street and he got upset and fired into the stump near them.Sprague decided to play "Big Tough Man" and went to Church's house and started to beat him up when Church shot him. I'm not buying the story about collecting firewood from across the street from Church's house. After the confrontation on Friday, the kids were there to harrass Church, plain and simple. Since Church is a elderly man, he has the right to protect himself from bodily harm by whatever means neccesary. I'm Assuming Sprague is a much younger man and entered Church's property and or house to bodily harm Church. Church apparently commited several offenses on Friday and Sunday leading up to the shooting death, but they are seperate from the shooting of Sprague.
"Nevada does not have a castle law, per se, despite multiple attempts by state legislators to enact such a law. However, the state does not require a duty to retreat by crime victims and allows for the use of deadly force in some circumstances.
For physical or deadly force to be justified in Nevada, a person must believe that his life or safety, or the life or safety of another, is in jeopardy. He also must use no more force than is necessary to subdue the attacker"
