Man faces counts of arson, attempted murder in apartment fire

A man suspected of setting a fire that displaced 23 people was arrested Sunday on counts of arson and attempted murder, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Salvador Hernandez, 33, was booked in connection with the blaze about 6:10 a.m. Sunday at the Sonoma Shadows apartment complex, authorities said.

Units from the Clark County Fire Department, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, and the North Las Vegas Fire Department responded to the fire at 1750 Karen Ave. The first arriving units encountered heavy fire and more help was needed, Clark County Fire Department officials said.

One person was injured and transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, but no further details were available. Damage was estimated at $400,000, authorities said.

The fire blocked an exit for eight apartments, and one resident fled to the balcony to escape the fire. He was rescued by firefighters, authorities said.

It took 76 firefighters about 35 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters were forced to cut electricity to the building.
