Regarding the Clark County Commission’s vote on recycling: Where is the sense in collecting recycled material once a week if the rate of recycling is 20 percent or less? It won’t make more people recycle just because of pickup being once a week if they don’t already do it. If it were mandatory to recycle, then I could agree with it. Whatever happened to the movement of people encouraging saving energy and natural resources? By recycling, you reduce air pollution and save oil, electricity, gas, water, man hours, trees and other natural resources. It looks to me like Republic Services ...

Why complain about recycling with a once per week pickup
Republic management and executives are better off with one day a week pickup. Why? They're cutting labor costs. Workers are not. They will get fewer hours and possibly even part time rather than full. Unions and workers should be livid and rightly so. Think Post Office and no Saturday mail in August! With most trash pick ups, especially one day a week, customers will have more recyclables than garbage. The collection bins are fine. Small sized recepticles are ideal for one and two person families. Large recepticles for more. It works. Republic will happily switch out if you need the larger containers. Kudoes to Republic Service workers. They do a yeomen's job.

You'd think it was common sense for any business losing 15 Billion (that's with a capital "B") to cut costs. But, no, when it's a governmental monster eating up tax dollars let the whining begin. Yes, I know, technically, the Post Office is not a governmental agency but it does go, hat-in-hand, to Washington bureaucrats for the money to bail it out and that amounts to Billions (again, that's with a capital "B"). Taxpayers can live without Saturday deliveries and a smaller, more efficient Postal Service, in my estimation. So kudos to the PO managment which wants to get income and outgo more in line with fiscal responsibility!
We have been using the larger bins and the once a week pickup for trash and recycled materials for a few months now.It seems to work fine for us as we now have One bin for all trash and a second bin for all recycled materials combined together in one container.I also might add that both bins have wheels making it easier to bring to the curb for pickup.This new system will save money for the consumer and also for Republic Services.
I wonder how much resources are being expended to support recycling.
On trash day, they send 3 trucks down our street.
One truck is to pick up the regular trash.
Another truck is to pick up the recyclables.
Another truck is to pick up trash that has been placed outside the bins (overflow).
That is 3 trucks consuming fuel, parts and oil.

It is a feel good thing.
It is expensive.
It probably consumes more resources than it saves.
It probably actually contributes more pollution than it prevents.

The third truck comes every other week by us for items that are not for the containers. Like bulk stuff and tree/shrub prunings.

We have had the new system for quite some time and find it much easier to use than the old one and have not had any problems with it.
It should actually encourage more people to recycle since it saves a lot of hassle and the new containers are big enough to easily hold a full week's worth of recyclables and are covered. The new garbage containers have the same properties, too. The old bins couldn't begin to hold a week's worth, let alone 2 weeks. The contents would often be blown around on a windy day.
My wife and I have no complaints about the new system at all.
I agree with Sam Pizzo. At my home in Texas, we have two large bins, one for trash(green colored) and one for recyclables(yellow top). Waste management picks up once a week. Rarely, do I see a trash bin overflowing where the top of the bin could not be closed down my alley however, if a larger family needs two trash bins on a regular weekly basis they can get an extra bin for $7.50 dollars extra per month.
A few of my neighbors who live beside me and across from me in the alley have an agreement to use any extra space in our polycart should we not use fully the space for our own trash. In other words, once the polycart is wheeled to the alley we use the extra space in our neighbors polycart for our trash should it exceed the space limits of our own polycart and vice versa. I have a deal with the neighbor behind me that if either of us forgets to wheel our polycarts down to the alley by 8:00am on trash pickup day then whomever notices he/she will wheel the cart down to the alley as a courtesy. The monthly trash collection fee paid is $15.22, which includes one trash and one recycling poly cart.
My parents live 20 minutes away and haul their trash to the curb in trash bags, a blue bag for recyclables and any other colored bag for trash. They have twice per week trash pickup. They wait until early in the morning to take their trash from their garage to the curb to avoid dogs and other animals from tearing through the trash bags for food scraps. I prefer the trash bin approach and I'm glad my community recycles.

But you are probably right and wrong.
There are 3 trucks that work my street every week.
One is for regular container.
Second is for recycle container.
Third is for trash that can't fix in the regular container (over flow).
There is probably a 4th truck that comes every other week to look for big bulk items and landscaping refuse.
I would have preferred the old way, with twice a week garbage pickup. Especially with diapers and dog droppings, no matter what you do, the Nevada sun works its wonders.

In my neighborhood, we just got rid of the three ridiculous plastic shoeboxes and instead received two 200 lb. capacity covered bins on wheels, one for recycling and one for regular trash.
Collections are now once a week -- and it is SO MUCH BETTER. Our recycling has increased, and the hastle factor is way way down. Don't knock the new system until you've tried it.

Very true. Except when that business has 535 people on its Board of Directors and each one insists that the business MUST fulfill his/her own personal ideals and ambitions before cutting one single cost, regardless of the impact on the company.
Example: No other company has been required BY LAW to fund 100% of its retirement costs for the next 75 years! And to do so out of net profits earned only in the next 10 years! Without that requirement, they'd be in good shape right now.
I have the large bins and I have 2 large bins that I bought at lowes right before they started this one day a week thing. Now they wont dump my 2 bins from lowes anymore, what a crock. Why would I recycle Republics trash for them ? they won't even dump my other bins that look just like thiers. Too bad all the entities can't do thier own garbage like boulder city does,then the crooks at republic couldnt scam us.
