Gov. Brian Sandoval has named Gary Fairman, a private attorney in Ely, to succeed District Judge Dan Papez, who retired after more than 20 years on the bench.
Fairman, 60, began practicing law in 1978 and served as deputy district attorney in White Pine County until 1982. Since then he has been in private practice and has represented a number of local governments.
The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection had nominated Fairman, Robert Gaston of Las Vegas and Kelly C. Brown, the district attorney of White Pine County.
The governor said that nearly 50 percent of Fairman's practice has been in litigation matters in the District Court.
The Seventh Judicial District encompasses Eureka, Lincoln and White Pine counties.
