Fire burns vacant home undergoing renovations

House fire

A two-story vacant home undergoing renovations caught fire today in west Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a fire about 11:46 a.m. at 8328 Emerald Isle Ave., near Lake Mead and Rampart boulevards. Firefighters arrived to a burning garage and a column of thick black smoke, said Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski.

Gasoline stored in the garage during the renovations fueled the fire, causing it to expand into the bedrooms above the garage. The fire caused about $80,000 in damage, Szymanski said.

Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental. Investigators could not determine an official cause but did not rule out the possibility that the power equipment and gasoline near a water heater could have created a spark, causing the fire, Szymanski said.
