Letter to the editor:

It’s not as though we lack gun laws

May I submit that guns are already controlled? The Second Amendment has done so by giving all citizens the right to keep and bear arms.

States are authorized to issue permits to those qualified to carry certain concealed firearms. Many states have reciprocal agreements in place concerning concealed weapons. Federal law allows active and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed weapons in any state, provided periodic qualifications are met.

Owning a gun carries with it the responsibility of securing it. Even though I know of no cases where public atrocities were committed by persons who can legally carry concealed weapons, some private persons can elect to disregard these rights by posting signs saying “no guns allowed.”

Maybe those signs should read “no guns allowed, except those carried by persons with a valid concealed weapons permit.”

How many lives would not have been lost in certain theaters, campuses and schools if concealed firearms carriers were allowed, present and took action?
