Fire causes major damage at house in northwest valley

Two adults were displaced from their house Wednesday after a fire started in the chimney and spread to the attic, causing major damage.

No one was injured. A damage estimate was not immediately released.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded about 9:40 p.m. to 4540 N. Conquistador St., near the 215 Beltway and Lone Mountain Road in the northwest valley.

Firefighters could see a column of smoke rising from the 4,000-sqaure-foot house as they left the station, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

A husband and wife had been burning wood in the fireplace when smoke started to fill the living room. The man checked in the attic and discovered the fire, Szymanski said.

The couple got out of the house and reported the fire.

When firefighters arrived, the flames had spread through the attic and broke through the roof, Szymanski said.

Firefighters were hampered in battling the blaze by limited access to fire hydrants in the area but extinguished the fire within an hour, Szymanski said.

The Clark County Fire Department will investigate the fire because the home is located in unincorporated Clark County.
