Letter to the editor:

Best gift is to invest in children’s future

When I became a great-grandma, I wanted to give my great-grandchildren presents for birthdays and Christmas. I decided instead of giving a toy or clothing, which would be soon forgotten, I would buy them a savings bond for both days.

I know they weren’t thrilled at the time, but now a couple of them are grown and they now have the bonds to help with college or just getting out into the world, which isn’t easy for young people.

If I would have given them “temporary” presents through the years, they would have forgotten what they got. Those who are of age and have gotten the bonds are so appreciative.

Government savings bonds are no longer issued, but there are other investments out there to buy for the future. Remember the old saying, “here today, gone tomorrow.” One day, they will thank you over and over.
