Former Assemblywoman Vivian Freeman dies at 86

RENO — Former Nevada Assemblywoman Vivian Freeman, a Democrat who pushed women’s rights issues, died Thursday at the age of 86.

She served in the Legislature from 1986 to 2002 representing northwest Reno.

Freeman was a nurse and member of the board of trustees at Washoe Medical Center, now Renown Regional Medical Center, from 1982 to 1986.

In the Assembly, she was chair of the Health and Human Services Committee and of the Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining Committee. She was an abortion rights advocate.

She is survived by her daughter Mitzi Watters of Sparks, a brother, Raymond Ruff of Aloha, Ore., and a sister, Grace Dye of Medford, Ore.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
