Temperature creeping toward 100-degree mark in valley

Updated Monday, April 29, 2013 | 11:23 a.m.

The heat is on, and parts of the Las Vegas could reach 100 degrees today.

The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for sunny skies with highs from 94 to 97 on the west side of the valley with the mercury topping out near 100 on the east side.

Sunday’s high for Las Vegas, measured at the National Weather Service station at McCarran International Airport, was 97 degrees, which tied a record high for the day first set in 2007.

The highest temperature on record in April occurred nearly 70 years ago, April 29, 1947, when thermometers topped out at 99 degrees.

The earliest Las Vegas reached the century mark was on May 1, 1947. That day, the official high temperature was 102.

Tuesday won’t be much better. Highs in the upper 90s are forecast for the valley.

Forecasters said a cold front pushing through the area late Tuesday should return temperatures to normal levels by Wednesday.
