NEW YORK — A day after flight delays plagued much of the U.S., air travel is smoother Tuesday. But the government is warning passengers that the situation can change by the hour as it runs the nation's air traffic control system with a smaller staff.

Airlines and members of Congress urged the Federal Aviation Administration to find other ways to make mandatory budget cuts besides furloughing controllers. While delays haven't been terrible yet, the airlines are worried about the long-term impact late flights will have on their budgets and on fliers.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker said he doesn't believe the furloughs can be tolerated for long.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood pointed the finger at Congress, which forced government agencies to cut spending after failing to reach a deficit-reduction plan.

  1. @edwinpagan

You can't rewrite history these cuts were slated as sequestration cuts forced onto the people because the GOP/Tea party didn't want to raise the Debt ceiling and they wanted a showdown. Which was long before the Newton murders as well as the gun law changes. Now you can tell your-self anything you want but that is the truth.

  2. Ok here's how its going to go down , Longer waits = fewer passengers = airlines losing money= government bailout = passengers get the shaft twice.

  3. Why would anyone with even half a brain blindly believe that this actually caused any serious delays? Because the media tells them so?

  4. Bunch of BULL. Just following the memo from O. to make this as difficult as possible for as many people as possible. If they can't reduce the increase, slow the increase, just a bit, SHUT THEM DOWN COMPLETELY. Where are the priorities for public safety? SECURE the border. Expel illegals. Stop allowing foreign students. Stop allowing "relatives" priority in immigration. JUST STOP THE BS.
