Training exercise to simulate armed attack at Las Vegas malls

Police and firefighters will conduct a counter-terrorism training exercise tonight simulating an attack by armed assailants at two malls on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Planning for the exercise began in February, before Monday’s deadly bombing attack at the Boston Marathon.

The goal of the exercise is to test the coordinated response of multiple law enforcement agencies, officials said. Metro Police officers, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers and Southern Nevada fire department personnel will participate.

Fire department medical personnel will work in unison with law enforcement officers as they treat and evacuate simulated casualties.

The exercise will begin at 11 p.m. at the Las Vegas Premium Outlet Mall, 7400 Las Vegas Boulevard South. As the exercise develops, there will be a second simulated attack at nearby Town Square, 6605 Las Vegas Boulevard South.

It is anticipated the exercise will conclude about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.
