Henderson approves church’s school expansion

New Song Church

Disgruntled residents from the Coventry neighborhood gathered at the Henderson City Council meeting Tuesday night to make one last effort to halt a neighborhood school expansion.

The issue: New Song Church of Seven Hills applied for a permit last July to expand its school to allow a first grade and three more students. Neighbors have complained that additional students would make bad traffic worse, and decrease property values.

The vote: The city council voted in favor of the school expansion 4-1, with Councilwoman Gerri Schroder against the resolution.

What it means: New Song Church, at 1291 Cornet St., has 59 students in preschool and kindergarten classes. The proposal will allow the property to cater to three more children.

Neighbors don’t believe it will stop at 62 students. Many people from the surrounding Coventry neighborhood said traffic would get worse and expressed dismay at the school's long-term plan to expand to a K-5 school and add 78 additional students.

Representatives from the church insisted Tuesday there are no plans to come before the city council again next year to ask for an additional expansion.
