More than 30 buildings around the valley are in need of repair before they can be reinhabited after serious floods in August and September, according to the Clark County government.

Storms on Aug. 22 and Sept. 11 caused widespread flooding throughout the county, resulting in the deaths of two people and significant property damage.

On Tuesday, the Clark County Commission will consider a declaration of emergency asking Gov. Brian Sandoval to proclaim a state of disaster in the county, which would help with obtaining state and federal resources to repair damage from the floods.

“A declaration of emergency is a necessary step in the process of requesting assistance from the state and federal government to find out what programs our community might be eligible for in order to recoup at least some portion of our clean up and repair costs,” Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani said in a statement.

The Clark County Building Department has inspected 91 homes and businesses after the floods and found 32 in need of repairs before they could be reoccupied.

Crews continue work to clear roads, flood channels and inlets of debris left in the storms’ aftermath.

No cost estimates for damage from the storms have been released.
