The organization that is coordinating Southern Nevada’s economic development strategy has named a longtime transportation expert its first chief executive.

The Las Vegas Regional Economic Development Council, the successor to the Nevada Development Authority, announced Tuesday that Tom Skancke, founder of the Skancke Co. in Las Vegas, has been named CEO and assume his new role on Thursday.

Skancke, who has been a consultant and adviser on a number of transportation projects affecting Southern Nevada, also served as a mediator on telecommunications regulations, zoning and entitlement stalemates, regional flood control, higher education and K-12 funding and several growth issues.

Skancke most notably has been a transportation consultant for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, a role he said he would continue.

In a release announcing the appointment, Skancke said he would cultivate economic development strategies, work with the board to create a new brand and name for the organization, begin fundraising, add new members, start an aggressive advertising and public relations strategy and help to create a competitive business environment to attract new companies.

“These are challenging times for our community,” Skancke said in the release. “Over the past two decades, my work has taken me all over the world and the United States garnering the experience I need to take on the challenge we’re facing in Las Vegas. Deciding to leave my company to take on this endeavor was not an easy decision, but it was the right thing to do at this point in my life.”
