Reno mayor recuperating from open heart surgery

RENO — Reno Mayor Bob Cashell is recuperating in a Reno hospital after undergoing a planned open heart surgery Tuesday, according to a family spokesman.

Although the surgery was planned, the three-term mayor, who has had a history of heart troubles, kept word of the operation private.

“Reno Mayor Bob Cashell underwent planned open heart surgery yesterday afternoon at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno where he is resting comfortably today," family spokesman Greg Ferraro said. "The procedure to replace a heart valve is a common and routine surgery and Mayor Cashell’s doctors expect him to make a full and complete recovery."

Cashell is expected to be hospitalized for several days before recuperating at home for four to six weeks.

Cashell is in the middle of his final term, which will expire in 2014.
