Steel equipment and structures were loaded into place at the new Nobu Hotel and restaurant in Caesars Palace on Wednesday, and Shadow Bar was closed temporarily to facilitate the move and installation. The 181-room Nobu, his first, will welcome friends and family for the shakedown period starting Dec. 15.
The official opening will be Feb. 4, but a few VIPs and high rollers will be there to check it out for New Year’s and the Consumer Electronics Show that follows. The Nobu hotel website officially launched Monday for reservations, and demand is already fantastic. It’s expected that chef Nobu Matsuhisa will be here for the now-anticipated Jan. 20 gala opening of the restaurant.
CIRQUE AND MANDALAY BAY: We’ve learned that Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte’s nearly 50,000-square-foot, three-tiered club at Mandalay Bay will open next spring and hold more than 2,000 people. DJs will have their own moving booth that travels around the venue, up, down and sideways. A first for Las Vegas, although as we reported earlier already in place at Guy’s favorite club in Ibiza with its five different music-style rooms. Several lighting and theatrical innovations at Pacha will be wilder at Mandalay Bay.
Mandalay Bay executives also have confirmed our prior story that in this club- theater combination, Cirque performers will have rigging to permit acrobatic performances from the ceiling to the floor against a special-effects backdrop wall of floating and changing scenery. Cirque additionally at Mandalay has the mid-May opening of the Michael Jackson show, so don’t be surprised if the theater and the nightclub premiere simultaneously.
THE SOUTH STRIP: Nightlife at the south end of the Strip with Bagatelle opening Oct. 31, Hakkasan at MGM Grand opening New Year’s Eve and now this Cirque-Light Group club means competition for Tao, Lavo, Tryst and XS on the north end and Marquee, Pure, Gallery and Chateau in the center.
NIGHTCLUB AT BILL’S: News of Victor Drai’s new nightclub project and makeover of the 175-room Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon into a boutique hotel that made headlines Wednesday was 7 months old to Vegas DeLuxe readers. We broke that story March 8 after hinting of the plan in August 2010.
