President Obama visits Hoover Dam

Updated Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 | 5:15 p.m.

Like many visitors who come to Las Vegas, President Barack Obama made his way Tuesday to the Hoover Dam. Shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, the president’s motorcade left the Westin Lake Las Vegas, where Obama is spending three days preparing for his upcoming debates with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, for the famed dam, constructed during the Franklin Delano Roosevelt administration. Obama, according to press reports, learned from an aide his hotel was only 15 minutes away from the dam and said, "Well, we've got to go check it out." Wearing a blue and white checkered collar shirt with sleeves ...

  1. .......as the country crumbles.

  2. and the endless obama vacation continues...

  3. This might be the only time he might be right when he says you didn't build it.

  4. Seven graphs about the President's visit and nine graphs about the Dam. Seems about right.

  5. Boy oh boy, the right-wingers sure like to suck on sour grapes.

  6. The dam wasn't entirely constructed under FDR, it was approved and had about 2 years of initial construction under Herbert Hoover. All FDR had to do was nothing.

  7. I wonder if seeing the dam might inspire him to build more of them instead of the wind/solar. There is a huge amount of construction involved and as we see they last quite a long time.
Then again, I wonder what he thought as he looked out at the water marks so high on the rocks and intakes..another problem!

  8. Nice The President visited Boulder Dam
To this Nevada native it will never be Hoover Dam

  9. costing the tax payers more money and more aggrivation for area business's. He should respect local business's who are effected by his visit. Las Vegas doesnt even like Obama!

  10. I'm with you Bill, it'll always be Boulder Dam to me!

  11. Yes Republicans YOU DIDN'T BUILD THAT!!!

  12. Would today's unhinged GOP push to build a government project comparable to the Hoover Dam, which was planned and initiated by Hoover?
    LOL, not a chance.

  13. Its great to see the President out actually engaging the great things in this country!

Part of our problem with the DC Office squatters of the past is that they didn't even take the time to know much of the country they presided over!

Another fact that you may like to know - Nevada has more registered Democrats than Republicans. New voter registration is also showing more D's than R's, So it appears that Nevada DOES like Obama!

I just don't understand the constant negative comments toward the President! Sheesh! Visiting the Dam is not a political issue! We should be happy that he cares enough to take the time to see it!

  14. What are you republicans going to do for another four years when Obama wins?

  15. Hoover Dam is a marvel of engineering, but there are bridges, dams, roads and other infrastructure all over the U.S. that badly need funds for repair.

Such spending has often been used to help the country move out of recessions. Now, we have multiple needs that can be met, jobs and infrastructure repairs. Good match.

Let's not forget that in decaying infrastructure, people's lives are effected. They could experience life threatening injuries, even death, due to some of the infrastructure failures.

I can't fault President Obama for going to see Hoover Dam. It is quite a sight to see. I am happy he did.

Here is a helpful link for those who are suffering so much from Obamaitis.

  16. "Hoover Dam is a marvel of engineering, but there are bridges, dams, roads and other infrastructure all over the U.S. that badly need funds for repair."

Maybe call your GOP congressmen and women and GOP Senators and tell them to stop blocking the infrastructure bill. those pesky facts

  17. I was at the Dam today conducting a tour, and found out when I arrived that the power plant was closed and for unsaid reasons. So, to provide my guests with a better tour I escorted a number of them onto the Dam and gave out great info about it. That's when I saw a guard watching some people at the bottom of the Dam walking outside of the NV power plant (as was common prior to 9/11). Turns out it was the Anointed One and his minions. Funny also, how when we were leaving the Dam (built during Herbert Hoover's administration, but finished during FDR's...amazing the author of this article couldn't get it right!), that the Power Plant elevators were suddenly working again.

Thanks for coming up to say hello, Mr President! Apparently the ladies on "The View" are good enough to talk with, but the taxpayers that will ultimately pay for your health care package don't deserve that same respect! A few years ago, Hollywood actress Kate Beckinsale was my guest on a Hoover Dam tour and she walked across the Dam with me and without any security in tow, but the President of the USA can't show his face on the Dam, except to a few. I'm not sure where his head is. He might not know either.

As for the author of this article, you might wish to do some fact checking on how much the Dam cost. What you quoted was the original bid, not the final cost. And if the Dam were to be built today, it would cost in the Billions, not just 10 or 15 times the original cost.

If it was built (only) during FDR's tenure, don't you think it would be named "Roosevelt Dam"?

  18. Do you get paid by the number of times you use the word "Soetoro"?

  19. YES, our great dam is what infrastructure money
    built.

And this new batch of bat-crazy republicans are
    STILL BLOCKING new infrastructure jobs.

    NEVER VOTE REPUBLICAN!

FOUR MORE YEARS FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!

  20. PRESIDENT OBAMA......

Please ignore the handfull of republican
cry-babies who are going to lose AGAIN!

  21. TEA....lmao that whole Fox/Drudge/Caller thing was an epic fail....just like the GOP has been since 2000.

Let me guess...you're an over 40 white guy?

  22. Think of the gaffes Mitt Romney would of said if he visited Hoover Dam, i can..

    :-)

  23. Glad you took my suggestion to visit the New Bridge and buy pizza.

Please ignore the haters, they know you will be reelected.

  24. Try to build a dam today. The eco-whackos would be all over you.

  25. What school did he go to where they did not teach you about the other Depression and Hoover Dam??

Maybe Obama learned something from the trip... That you can have government contracts that give kickbacks to campaign supporters AND create real jobs that stimulate the economy!

  26. I'm glad President Obama took a moment from his trip to visit the Dam. It's truly an engineering marvel.

However, it seems the truth is poison to Traeger.

This tired old retread of something that Tucker Carlson himself reported on in 2007? Only the most gullible fall for Tucker's "scary black man!" schtick.

Watch Tucker cover this speech in 2007... on his show... on MSNBC:
    http://youtu.be/TyaNm3zHMRY

    Watch it and weep, Mark.

Had you been watching MSNBC, you would've known about this speech 5 years ago, Mark. Instead, your slavish devotion to right-wing media has left you looking pretty silly.

Heck, even Fox News covered Obama's reference to Pastor Wright in 2008. Watch it and weep, Mark: http://bit.ly/UdBVFT

    Hey, here's a story by the AP/CBS News on Obama's speech: http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-250_162-2888...

    Read it and weep, Mark.

Why are the slavish sycophants of right-wing media so gullible?

  27. Still as gullible as ever, I see. Why do you keep falling for this hogwash, Mark?

Tucker Carlson covered the speech in 2007... on his own show.

Are you calling Tucker incompetent? Doesn't that undermine your own argument?

Tucker covered it. Fox News covered it. The AP covered it.

This kind of half-baked logic of yours is so easily debunked. Don't believe everything you read on the internet, Mark.

  28. "Not seen on msnbc."

C'mon, let's hear more of your wacky conspiracy theory.

Why didn't Tucker cover all this in 2007?

I mean, he had a segment on the speech on his show:

    http://youtu.be/TyaNm3zHMRY

It's there for anyone to watch.

You didn't watch it, obviously, because if you did, you'd realize how silly you sound.

Did Keith Olbermann waterboard Tucker? Did David Axelrod threaten Tucker's family? Did Rachel Maddow hold his dog hostage?

What's the excuse... err, conspiracy, Mark?

  29. "They covered what was "released" to the press. Not the racist, divissive remarks that the LPOTUS ad-libbed in the speech."

This is debunked by FOX NEWS!

Watch Fox News cover Obama talking to Rev. Wright... what you and Tucker claimed was NEVER BEFORE SEEN! Fox broadcast this in 2008:
    http://bit.ly/UdBVFT

You've fallen for this charade! Hook, line and sinker. You should really do a bit of critical thinking before you post any more of this wacky conspiracy theory, Mark.

    Your conspiracy doesn't add up.

  30. I don't know what y'all are talking about..Tucker Carlson..some speech?
Tell you the truth..if it doesn't have anything to do with lady parts..or carnage..preferably, carnage --> somewhere else..most people aren't interested...
