A gay rights advocacy group is vowing to appeal a federal court judge's ruling upholding Nevada's ban on same-sex marriage.
U.S. District Chief Judge Robert Jones ruled that Nevada has what he calls "a legitimate state interest" in maintaining the traditional institution of marriage between one man and one woman.
He says the state has the right to prohibit recognition of marriages from other states.
Lambda Legal attorney Tara Borelli noted Friday that gay marriage is pending before the U.S. Supreme Court, while voters recently approved same-sex marriage in three states and defeated a ban in a fourth.
Borelli calls Jones's ruling late Thursday out-of-step with the rest of the country and wrong on the law.
A lawyer for the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage isn't commenting.

"Borelli calls Jones's ruling late Thursday out-of-step with the rest of the country and wrong on the law."
Jones has been on the federal bench for so long he's completely detached from reality, and so arrogant the same appellate court has said of him "Such arrogance and assumption of power by one individual is not acceptable in our judicial system."
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." -- George Orwell's "Animal Farm" (1945)
It will take about four years to change the Nevada State Constitution to remove that wording. It will be much faster if SCOTUS can do it in one fell swoop.
It needs to happen because it is the right thing to do.
It needs to happen as soon as possible to allow Las Vegas as the marriage capital of the world to be "full service" and not forfeit to other locations.
Just another example of Nevada's faux libertarianism. All talk. But, whenever individual rights are decided, the "libertarian collective" goes against people's rights.
The only "libertarianism" here is the lust for money, and low taxes.

Absolutely agree..
I want to marry my ferret. I love her and she loves me.
Damn this judge for not allowing it!
I might want to marry 2 of my ferret's. I have a new one that's pretty cute. Why not? Damn judge!
I know you might have trouble understanding this Mr. Coburn but we are talking about relationships between CONSENTING ADULTS.
Now I can only assume your ferret's are not able to be consenting adults that can sign a marriage license.
