Dream Act immigrants eligible for Nevada driver’s licenses

Immigrants brought to the country illegally as children and granted a temporary reprieve by President Barack Obama this summer will be eligible for Nevada driver's licenses and state IDs, state officials told the Sun this week. And Gov. Brian Sandoval supports the policy, he said in a statement. That brought a sigh of relief from immigration advocates. But at least one Republican lawmaker said the Nevada Legislature should weigh in on the question when it meets in early 2013. By some estimates, Nevada is home to 20,000 young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children who qualify for the ...

  1. By all means, let's make the USA even more attractive for the Rio Grande waders to come here clandestinely or illegals to come from anywhere else. They already get food stamps, welfare, free health care, Social Security, vote illegally and a pass from a non-caring federal government. So, what's the big deal about providing them with a little thing like driving priviledges? Hand me a barf bag, please!

  2. What's a few thousand more junk, uninsured cars on the road ?

  3. boof boof boof BOOF! BOOF! BOOF BOOF BOOF!

Sorry, Las Vegas Sun, but I couldn't resist. The above is the sound of ultra-conservative commenters' heads exploding in unison at this revelation.

The GOP absolutely will NOT let go of any and all instances where they can lash out at illegal immigrants. Because in their world, it's a lot easier to do that. Than it is to try to actually try to address the problem. And far be it from a GOoPer to fix anything. No, no, no. Can't have that. There must be this mad scramble to grab monkey wrenches and throw them in the gears as fast, furious and savagely as possible.

Here's a simple fact for my ultra-righty friends.

President Obama, and his entire administration, due to his win in this past election, now definitively has a mandate.

The reason why without any doubts, none at all, he has a mandate is that the Latino American vote, not only in Nevada, but nationwide, went for him. By a very wide majority.

    Because he has produced.

Get used to it, righties. There will be a new DREAM Act on the table. And Tea/Republicans all over this great nation know it's going to happen. But still they will fight it tooth and nail.

I actually think their efforts, whether they fail or succeed in blocking any DREAM Act legislation, will signal their total and complete plummet to assured downfall.

Whichever way they go will spell doom. Because an entire race of American voters will NEVER EVER vote for any of them EVER.

So, keep on demonizing and dehumanizing Latino Americans, GOoPers. Go full out Sharron Angle and denigrate an entire race of people. All in order to appeal to a shrinking base of supporters.

This is going to ensure the Tea/Republican Party goes the route of velociraptors. We're talking serious extinction.

The long and short of it is that the message stinks. Especially when it comes to this issue.

  4. "Gov. Brian Sandoval supports the policy, he said in a statement."
    -----------------------

    Freak out Nevada Republican Teaheads.

    WooT LoL :>

  5. When I get pulled over by the cops I ask them to treat me like an illegal alien. They let me go, too much paperwork otherwise.

  6. Illegal used to mean against the law. What is the definition now?

  7. "Deferred action for childhood arrivals"

I don't have any problem with this but let's be real about the implementation:

The local DMV simply does not have the means to verify the "childhood arrivals" from the Los Zetas here on temporary assignment - So, we will have the classic MISSION CREEP extending a valid form of identification (gets you on an airplane) with no means of cross-referencing the applicants information. " Oh, I am sorry, when I came here from Mexico at 3 years old, my nacimientos (birth certificate) was left and my Auntie's finca 200 miles North of Oaxaca. My Auntie does not have telephone there."

    Next in line please

So, we will be issuing a valid ID to people using aliases.

  8. And they say the GOP are racists. Here is a clear example of the Dems being racist.

If you are white or black, you have to follow the law. if you are Latino, you can break them and get rewarded...

We need a score card to show what laws what race can brake and what laws what race has to follow.

Plus when each get bonus points and free stuff from Santa Obama

  9. Out with the old, in with the new" the DREAM Act" replacing American middle class with workers willing to work for less money with their extended family living crowded together just like in Mexico except that here, there is always a job and free free free benefits, Viva la Mexico.

That moan being heard now is the sound of America dying. What else could one expect from being led by Mr Obama who can't produce his own documents of how or who paid for his collage or if he also lied claiming foreign alien status receiving free or lower tuition cost than other Americans? And if you don't like the Dream Act.. . remember King Obama's (kill list) decree that Americans can be killed just because King Obama says so?

Surprise Gov Sandoval supports the Dream Act just like Brian's mentor Harry Reid. Oh my look how the big government party is taking care of Corporate America CEO's addiction for low paid unskilled workers and the U.S. government might have a few empty houses for ya with more empty houses coming soon".

To all of the bo bo's that voted for President Obama , Thanks, now hurry up and get all your family up here rapido" cause this dream is just too good to be true.

  10. I think I just heard a few heads exploding from our fellow bigots always spewing their bigotry on this site.

    Bigotry gets you no where.

  11. Illegals either over stayed their visa illegally or sneaked into the country illegally.

So they don't have a problem with breaking US laws.

Many of them use bogus social security number or "borrow" a social security number from a US citizen.

A few of them have fake birth certificates or other fake documents and obtain driver licenses.

Some of the vote and there is nothing to prevent them from lying on the voter registration form. There is absolutely no attempt by Nevada SOS to use the EVerify system to see if they are actually using a government issued social security number.

So what is the point of changing any of the laws?

We don't enforce any of the laws?

    Why even have laws?

  12. "Those cards had been issued to other noncitizens in the country legally and have been accepted by the DMV since at least 1999, Malone said." If that's the case, how have citizenship-voting rights been handled so far? It would appear that if the only ID requirement to register & vote is for a NV ID, unless the process of registering filters out "illegals", then we've undoubtedly had "illegals" registering & voting for years now.

I've no problem with NV issuing IDs, and would even go far as to offer them to anyone who can provide some form of ID, domestic or foreign, provided those who couldn't verify US citizenship also provided biometric data and their records annotated appropriately (so that they could be filtered out of the voting rolls). Then require a NV ID (but not necessarily US legal status) for employment, schools or social services.

Immigration has been the American Way since the beginning, with nativists always on the losing end (just ask Native Americans) -- and that's not going to change. We can try to manage it better -- securing the borders, better screening of those who seek entry, favoring those with family ties already here or possess desired skills or education (such as english, STEM, etc), tighten up social services with concepts like "workfare" to discourage public dependency, and offer paths to citizenship that favor public service over time here. And we can drop the ridiculous notion favored by some xenophobes that we'll somehow be able to round up or drive out millions of illegals -- ain't gonna happen. No decent American, Republican or Democrat, is going to stand for some mass roundup of women & children and sending them off to Mexico or holding camps (talk about optics -- the comparison to Jews being hauled off to Nazi death camps would be stark & dramatic).

  13. America U.S. Constitutional Republic 1776-2012 RIP

America U.S. Democrazy (mob rule) 2012-Armageddon

  14. who cares? this country is little by little becoming north mexico anyway. just keep rolling out the red carpet for all the illegals.

  15. While we don't need boatloads more poorly educated immigrants -- we have enough of our own poorly educated, to include the illegals already here -- better screening of those entering combined with secured borders plus domestic policies that encourage education, fair trade & energy development will do more for more Americans than anything the far left or far right are proposing.

Americans, especially the young, will be much better served over the long run with regards to employment if they a)study hard in and out of school, working on developing real job skill basics such as STEML & vocational training, and, b)supporting "fair" trade policies that prevent other countries from dumping their products here or US employers from shipping jobs overseas & importing products back here, and, c)supporting "all of the above" domestic energy policies that encourage development of non-renewable and renewable resources along with increased efficiency of what we do use.

  17. Most illegal imigrants are too afraid of being deported to apply for governemnt services, but they are getting more and more brave considering our government doesn't have the resources, or the will to fix anything in this country. There are so many illegal imigrants now, to think that we can deport them is foolish, we need to come up with a real solution. They are people trying to take care of their families just like everyone else. I don't think the government should give anything to anyone for free, food stamps, medicare, welfare should be elminated period, you want something, earn it.

  18. Congratulations to all of these kids that have never done anything wrong . They are victims of their own parents crime and therefore deserve no punishment . There is no reason to punish them in any way yet so many seek only to destroy them because of their hatred which is apparent in their commentary. The state of Nevada [spanish ] and city of Las Vegas [spanish]was Mexico Del Norte long before Bam1969 and his family invaded the Nevada territory

  19. This will likely result in those not here legally and not citizens to vote and that is wrong.

  20. PaulRupp says - 'in with the new" the DREAM Act" replacing American middle class with workers willing to work for less money'

If you can be easily replaced at your place of work by an immigrant with little to no education, the immigrants are not the problem, YOU are the problem. You have squandered the opportunities America offers, and you don't deserve a middle class lifestyle.

Stop blaming immigrants, take some personal responsibility, and better your life!

  21. Some of the comments on here make me sick. You want to hold young children responsible for having crossed the border with their parents illegally? WOW, I know UNLV offers sociology classes. Ever heard of "life chances"? Grow up people and stop trying to hold kids who were brought here illegally resonsible. Would you rather them have a chance at an education or continoue to live off section 8 housing and welfare the rest of their time on this planet?? Oh, and i am a white male

  22. Why is it that any American who disagrees with our government policies of giving everything away i.e., jobs (NAFTA- CCRFTA- CAFTA-Cheap China Junk), Foreign Aid ($), the keys to our country (immigration), Religious rights, including our personnel liberty (TSA-Patriot Act) is labeled radical racist or bigot?

Happily, I personally find it more desirable to be a bigot than agree with policies that continue to destroy Americas middle class and small business.

  23. Congratulations to all of these kids that have never done anything wrong . They are victims of their own parents crime and therefore deserve no punishment .
    --------
There are millions of kids who get "punished by their parents actions...financial, criminal, neglect, etc....THAT IS LIFE!! What about all the kids who have Dads sitting in prison? What about all the kids who grew up with poverty parents who couldn't afford a single Christmas present? Aren't they punished as well?

  24. Sandiegorebel you have a point not to hold the children responsible. Then maybe we should round up the parents, who broke the law, and just deport them. Is that your solution, or are we to just let it go and give everyone a pass? Just wondering. I presume you're from California, and last I read they are bankrupt.

  25. Love how people toss the race card around. In related news:

Illegal immigrants could receive more than $7 billion this year in federal tax credits, according to one estimate, thanks to a loophole in the law that allows people not authorized to work to reap the government payments with no questions asked.

Sen. Jeff Sessions' office calculated that, based on recent trends, illegal immigrants could receive roughly $7.4 billion through a provision known as the Additional Child Tax Credit. That's more than quadruple what the payout was four years ago, but the payments have been steadily increasing over the past decade.

Though illegal immigrants are prohibited from receiving similar tax credits, a quirk in the law allows them to qualify for the child tax credit. And it's a "refundable" credit, meaning recipients can reap the money -- with average checks totaling about $1,800 -- even if they've paid no taxes.

  26. "I have no problem with immigrants as long as they follow the same rules and guidelines as everyone else who attained citizenship legally."

PaulRupp & ilk -- all of us of non-native, European ancestry are here without the permission of this continent's prior inhabitants. Maybe you should each look up "hypocrite" then take a drive about 50 miles north on I-15 and ask the Moapas how they feel about our ancestors who took this land away from theirs.

"Give me your tired, your poor / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" -- inscribed on a plaque in the museum in the base of the Statue of Liberty

  27. So whatever happened to Obama's illegal uncle who was arrested for DUI. Did he get another drivers license?

  28. The first license to drive a motor vehicle was issued to the inventor of the modern automobile, Karl Benz in 1888. Because the noise and smell of his Motorwagen resulted in complaints by the citizens of Mannheim, Benz requested and received written permission by the Grand Ducal authorities to operate his car on public roads.

The first locality to require a mandatory license and testing was Prussia, on September 29, 1903. 1903 was also when the first states, Missouri and Massachusetts, passed laws requiring all drivers to have a license.

Up until then, horseless carriages were thought of as just that -- carriages without horses. There was no licensing requirement to "drive" a horse. Even though Missouri was first to require a driver license, it wasn't until 1952 that the state required a driver examination. Massachusetts required a driver examination for commercial chauffeurs as early as 1907.

Prior to 1903, some cities and towns tried licensing requirements, Chicago passed a law in 1898 requiring the owners of almost anything with wheels, including bicycles and wagons, to be licensed. That law was later ruled unconstitutional.

In 1910, the German imperial government mandated the licensing of drivers on a national scale, establishing a system of tests and driver's education requirements that would serve as a model for the licensing laws of other countries.

Because a large number of countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States have no national indentification cards and because of the widespread use of cars, driver's licenses are often used as a de facto standard form of identification.

Issuing driver's licenses and state IDs to illegal immigrants under a presidential temporary reprieve today will assist authorities in tracking/indentifying and potentially capturing/deporting such noncitizens tomorrow.

  29. KillerB: That time period was known as the American-Indian wars. They lost. Move on !!

  30. "So whatever happened to Obama's illegal uncle who was arrested for DUI. Did he get another drivers license?"

Yes. Obama's mini-me, Deval Patrick, (Guv-Mass) made sure of it.

His illegal aunt is still living in section-8 housing also.

  31. These young people, who are trying their best to comply with USA law (unlike their parents), should be given provisionary licenses until they gain full citizenship so that they CANNOT VOTE until they are official USA citizens. That is only fair. Furthermore, society benefits, because these Dream Act youth will get insurance, and be following the law.

There is no doubt that our country's immigration policies need fixing, streamlining, and ENforcement.

    Blessings and Peace,
    Star

  32. @ KillerB-VegasEngineer, it would be helpful to know who you guys really are as vegasEngineer could be anyone from a governmental structural engineer to a locomotive engineer to a guy like the owner of M Resorts...

vegasEngineer-So the millions of Americans unemployed or underemployed" the underlying reason and fault is because people failed to better themselves in a rigged system where American manufacturing and jobs have evaporated? Again it would be most helpful to know who vegasEngineer is and or represents before any further comments/responses.

KillerB- Should the U.S. give California back to Mexico/indigenous Indians, also?

"I am happily married(1999) to a Mexican lady who overstayed her visa"was required to leave and stay out of the U.S. for 1 year (2000-2001). Our family paid the price, if anyone walked the walk and not just talked the talk perhaps they also would have more than a sour taste swallowing an unlawful policy that now rewards others, contrary to what our family and the hardship's we endured when we approached the U.S. government in goodfaith to lawfully change our family's immigration's status".- PaulRupp

"True morality consists not in following the beaten track, but in finding out the true path for ourselves and in fearlessly following it". - M Gandhi (1869-1948)

  33. UNCONSTITUTIONAL for any State to license illegals--only Congress can do that.
