Metro: Prescription drug abuse leading to more heroin use — and deaths – in valley

The mirror told Jeff Thompson, then 18 years old, all he needed to know: He saw stick-like arms and exhausted eyes, a young body on a downward spiral. Consider it the climax in Thompson’s young life story, which includes marijuana use by age 12, prescription pills two years later and heroin by 16 or 17. He can’t quite remember. “I was so tired of getting high just so I could act normal,” said Thompson, now 23. Fearful of a federal case against him, Thompson checked into rehab July 10, 2007, weighing only 110 pounds despite his 5-foot-11-inch frame. He’s been ...

  1. It is my contention that it is easier to never start a bad habit (which will lead to addiction) then it is to stop it. Only fools or those with low "self-esteem" would ever think that using "recreational" drugs would alter their lives for the better. Sooner or later, the drugs will take over - be they alcohol or some other form of hallucinogen. For your own sake, avoid "recreational" drugs like the plague they are.

  2. I rarely agree with you, Jerry, but this time you're right on. Thanks for including alcohol in the list - it's just as bad, if not moreso, than any other recreational drug. Problem is, it's legal, and heavily marketed as something "good times" can't be had without. Lies, all lies.

  3. time for some good old fashioned regulation of prescription medication...
    regulation of big pharma...
    regulation of the docs...
    regulation of the pharmacies...
    period...
    end of story...
and the saddest part of all...
the only reason this happens is...
    campaign contributions!!!
    DISGUSTING!!!

  4. As a person who had Add for 25 years, it's sad to see the kids, who I mentor, fail after taking drugs like Adderal to slow them down. It's an amphetamine, it slows them down despite being a stimulant for most people. But put a "meth" in front of the word amphetamine, and you get an idea of where kids, mostly boys, end up. In the slammer, with rotten teeth. We need to do better than this...

  5. This is a terrible addiction to deal with ,I have 2 friends who are dealing with thier sons addicted to heroin. It starts out as a bad idea to try it and BAM theyre hooked. I'd like to catch the idiots supplying all this crap and let the parents deal with them .
