Many of us have drawn a 17 in blackjack with the dealer showing a face card. Sucks, right? That’s how players on the UNLV basketball team should feel heading into this season. Facing unrealistic expectations of a deep NCAA Tournament run, they could face a no-win situation even if they play their best. The Rebels open Monday by hosting Northern Arizona in a season some misguided diehards feel could be the return to the glory years of the late 1980s and early '90s. The article would have been more impressive had it come before the exhibition game. Now anyone that saw or heard about the game should know this.

You don't know that Mr. Brewer, why is it hard to believe the Rebels in FFs or national championship form again?
Very well written and well said. I will agree that UNLV has made a strong effort in recruiting talented players and the potential is there for a successful season, but so far UNLV has not played to the preseason hype. UNLV was extremely lucky to escape with an 81-80 OT win against Dixie State a division II school. UNLV did not do well against UCLA in the closed scrimmage. Mr. Rice hasn't figured out how to instill discipline, and basic fundamental basketball. I'll admit my heart belongs to Indiana University and Hoosier basketball, but I do hope UNLV has a successful season, its all up to Mr. Rice, can he become a real coach.
Why not have some lofty expectations? The fact is, Coach Rice has assembled a team, given the talent level, that has the potential to be in the NCAA tournament for years to come. Will ANY team ever be as good as the 1990 or'91 teams? I don't think so, but right now is a great time to be a Rebel fan, and to ponder the possibilities.
the 1992 team went 23-2. would've gone far in the tournament with a high seed. they were NOT in declined that season. It was the next season when Maxon, (however you spell the jerk's name)killed the program.
Despite being one of the harsher critics of our team, I still hold high expectations every year. The last thing I want to hear is that we will "never" return to the glory years. I would like someone else to cover the Rebels. We should have high expectations EVERY YEAR. Anything less than a deep tourney run IS A FAILURE. That's what big time programs do....
Just because the team has a lot of potential doesn't mean the coach knows how to use it. On the brighter side, season ticket sales were a record high for the last 20 yrs.
for once i find myself in agreement with sinatra; who are you to say we'll "never" achieve that again? that EXACT kind of magic? maybe not, but that level of success? it's pretty stupid to assert that there's no possible way for us to be in the championship conversation every year.

Not one shred of analysis, not one acknowledgement of what the NCAA did to the UNLV program in its pursuit of Coach Tarkanian, and what the program has since had to do to recover. Nothing, in fact, except one 30-something writer wasting an opportunity just to proclaim to everyone that all UNLV fans should just let it go.
Okay, Mr. Brewer, please, how about offering up one piece of objective analysis as to why your excercise in journalistic schadenfreude is to be given any value?
I intend to be disappointed whenever I click an article and see that it was written by Ray Brewer, but this article is just ridiculous.
I agree that the expectations for this year might be a bit high, but that doesn't mean they can't meet them or even exceed them. The foundation Rice has already built in just 1 full year has already made Rebel fans ecstatic and has garnered national attention from both the media and some of the top recruits.
Will you ever be able to re-capture the excitement of your youth Ray? Probably Not. But that doesn't the program can't recreate the "Glory Days" for a new generation of Rebels fans.
"Never." That is a fairly definite word.
I was born and raised here and remember my dad taking me to a game at the Rotunda. I was going to UNLV when they won the championship. Even in the glory days they didn't make it to the Final Four everytime. Plus glory days is something more properly assigned in retrospect.
I think these will be glory days. It has taken a long time but it really seems that we are back to having a perennial contender team. A team that can recruit top prospects, a team that is respected.
Brewer, like a lot of people lacks perspective and focuses only on the championship team.
