Man shot by Metro Police in hostage standoff identified

A man Metro Police officers shot and killed in a hostage situation Friday outside Siegel Suites apartments has been identified as Daniel Tiawan Hathorne, 39, of Las Vegas, the Clark County Coroner’s Office said.

Police said Hathorne had been in an argument with the apartment manager over an eviction and threatened to take hostages. When Metro officers Russell Ellsworth and Brandon Oris arrived at 3825 Cambridge St., Hathorne grabbed an elderly woman and held her hostage with two knives at her throat, police said.

Police shot Hathorne several times after he failed to release the hostage, authorities said. Coroner’s officials said Hathorne died from the bullet wounds.
