Nevada Highway Patrol troopers investigate a fatal accident on the Rancho Drive on-ramp to U.S. 95 northbound Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

Fatal accident

A tire-tread separation led to a fatal accident Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 95 near Rancho Drive, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Trooper Loy Hixson said the single-vehicle accident happened at 1:40 p.m. when a Jeep was traveling north on the highway.

A tire-tread separation caused the male driver to lose control of the Jeep, and the vehicle rotated clockwise to the right, Hixson said. In the process, the Jeep struck a right-side concrete barrier and overturned onto its roof, he said.

The driver died at the scene, Hixson said. A female passenger was transported to University Medical Center, but her condition was unknown, Hixson said.

Two left lanes are open on the northbound side of the highway, but traffic is moving slow as NHP investigates and clears the scene, Hixson said.
