Of the many photo exhibits popping up around town to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of the Las Vegas News Bureau, none are so amusingly site-specific as the The Golden Age of Glam opening June 6 at the Cosmopolitan.
For this exhibit, curator Brian "Paco" Alvarez took into consideration the hotel’s motto, “Just the right amount of wrong,” while digging through the vast archive of Las Vegas’ past. Whimsical, and sometimes arty, the images include that of a female scuba diver playing a slot machine underwater at a bottom-of-the-pool table and a shot of 50s-era sci-fi celeb, Robby the Robot, playing craps at the Sands.
Finding images of models posing in a giant shoe for a burlesque-style ‘60s-era performance, however, is unbelievably serendipitous, given the myriad impromptu (and for a while, prohibited) photo sessions at Cosmo by tourists posing in the giant shoes on property.
While Golden Age features a chunk of outlandishly fun vignettes of Vegas yesteryear, it’s just one of several Bureau’s exhibits highlighting celebrities, hotels, shows and events. For 65 years the Las Vegas News Bureau has been tasked with marketing Las Vegas to the world, creating in the process a rich historical archive of America at play.
