Flames as high as 30 feet erupted into the air Thursday from the attic of an apartment near Smoke Ranch Road and Jones Boulevard that displaced 25 people.

Firefighters who saw smoke in the northwest valley and went to investigate found the blaze that occurred around 6:30 p.m. at a 16-unit apartment complex at 2320 Tucumcari Drive, said Tim Szymanski, spokesman for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Residents of the complex who heard crackling noises and saw smoke were able to evacuate the structure, Szymanski said.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about three hours, Szymanski said. The roof of the building that covered eight apartment units was destroyed.

The American Red Cross is assisting the residents of the complex, Szymanski said. No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation and crews will remain on watch overnight to watch for any flares until the morning when fire investigators will be able to inspect the damage and determine a cause, Szymanski said.
