CARSON CITY — The Clark County School District will receive a $16 million federal grant to help improve students’ reading and writing skills.

The money will be used over two years to hire additional teachers, said Colin Usher, project manager for the grant at the state Department of Education. It will also be used for training and purchases of such things as iPads and books, he said.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Keith Rheault said Nevada was one of nine states to get the grant, and Clark County was one of four Nevada counties to receive money for the first two years of the program.

Statewide, the grant is for $71 million spread over five years.

The money is important because the state has been unable to put any extra funds into reading and writing programs for the past four years, Rheault said. It is one of the largest competitive federal grants ever received by Nevada, he said.

The other districts getting the two year grant are Washoe, $4.2 million; Douglas, $3.1 million; and Lyon, $4.1 million.
