Las Vegas police say federal investigators are launching a six-month review of the department's policies after 142 people were killed in 378 officer-involved shootings since 1990.
Police spokesman Bill Cassell announced Friday that the U.S. Department of Justice has hired a Washington D.C.-based management firm called the Center for Naval Analysis to conduct the investigation.
Officials from the organization will travel to Nevada next week to meet with Las Vegas police and community leaders.
Cassell says the police department supports a transparent review.
The organization is expected to present its recommendations to Sheriff Douglas Gillespie by mid-August.
American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada Executive Director Dane Claussen says he will meet with the group Tuesday. He says the DOJ should investigate the police department, not an outside group.
